In the process of international integration, national culture faces great opportunities and challenges. The phenomenon of young people distancing themselves from tradition has been frankly acknowledged by the Party in many documents, most recently in Directive No. 42-CT/TW of the Party Central Committee " on strengthening the Party's leadership over the work of educating revolutionary ideals, ethics, and cultural lifestyles for the younger generation in the period 2015-2030 ". The "24h Movement" program on VTV1 featured a short report reflecting the reality of young people's understanding of national history. In it, the presenter asked several students, from elementary to high school, questions along the lines of: Who was Quang Trung – Nguyen Hue ? The answer is astonishing to those who are deeply committed to the history and culture of the nation. A national hero, renowned throughout history, yet students today still make such serious mistakes. This is truly sad, regrettable, and thought-provoking! It also serves as a wake-up call in public opinion, especially among young people, about the serious lack of understanding of national history. This is not just a reality; it is a clear and present danger of forgetfulness leading to the permanent loss of valuable knowledge!
The above situation places the teaching and learning of History in schools, and the organization of activities aimed at educating about traditions, at the heart of the educational program, aiming to build a new generation of students rich in ideals and revolutionary ethics.
In line with that overall goal, Bac Ha No. 1 High School designed and constructed a project called "The Epic of Vietnam".
In terms of form, this work is a mural with a total length of approximately 30 meters, comprising smaller paintings that depict the development of Vietnamese national history, from the legend of the origin of "Children of the Dragon and the Immortal" to glorious chapters of resistance against foreign invaders: the Battle of Bach Dang in 938, the three victories against the Mongol invaders, the Dien Bien Phu victory " renowned throughout the world and shaking the earth ,"...
The mural also depicts the achievements of the Ho Chi Minh era, from President Ho Chi Minh's search for a path to national salvation, to the founding conference of the Party, the birth of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, the victory at Dien Bien Phu, and the Spring Offensive and Uprising of 1975. National heroes who made significant contributions to these glorious victories appear at the center of the paintings: the Trung Sisters, Ngo Quyen, Tran Hung Dao, Le Loi, Quang Trung, Ho Chi Minh, etc.
In particular, the mural also dedicates spaces to depicting Vietnamese cultural traditions, from the legend of "Banh Chung and Banh Giay" to the legend of Saint Giong, from the divine poem "Nam Quoc Son Ha" to the time when Nguyen Trai wrote "Dai Cao Binh Ngo,"...
The painting spans the length of history, embodying the depth of culture. It is history viewed from a cultural perspective. History and culture intertwine and converge, creating the beauty of the nation's traditional essence. It concludes with the image of a Vietnamese naval soldier standing proudly guarding the skies and seas of the homeland, accompanied by a couplet reminding every Vietnamese citizen of the sacred and inviolable sovereignty of the Fatherland:
"The stone pillar of oath, swearing to protect the mountains and rivers, the mountains and rivers embracing the shape of Vietnam."
"My heartfelt wish is to guard the sky and sea, the sea and sky imbued with heroic spirit."
The system of paintings spanning the course of history has helped students at Bac Ha No. 1 High School learn history naturally. Essentially, these vivid visual images are a creative experiential activity that yields practical results. This is not just learning history through pictures—lively, relatable, and easy to remember due to visual impact—but also demonstrates the spirit and skills of cooperation and mutual support among the school's teachers and students. Furthermore, these artworks showcase the talent of amateur "artists," marking a friendly educational environment where talents are discovered, nurtured, and contributed to the common good of the community.
