Located in the upper part of Cam Khe district, Van Ban commune has large areas of land planted with thorny palm trees - a characteristic plant of the ancestral land. In previous years, the palm fruit products of the people in the commune and neighboring communes were only harvested and processed in raw form, so the economic efficiency was not high.
Recognizing the potential of this raw material to be processed into edible oil, Mr. Nguyen Anh Tuan's family in Nuong Son area boldly invested in modern machinery to produce palm oil for sale on the market. Recently, the People's Committee of Cam Khe district decided to recognize Song Thao palm oil as meeting OCOP 3-star standards, contributing to the preservation of local product values on the journey of building sustainable new rural areas.
The Song Thao palm oil product participated in the assessment and evaluation process and was certified as a 3-star OCOP product.
The palm oil production area is currently managed by Mr. Nguyen Anh Tuan's household in a collaborative production and consumption model with other households in the commune, covering 8 hectares and yielding 250 tons of fresh palm fruit per year. After harvesting, the fresh palm fruit is washed, steamed, and the seeds are removed to obtain the pulp. The pulp, rich in nutrients, is then dried, pressed, and filtered to produce pure palm oil. Palm oil is rich in vitamin E (9.04 mg/kg). The vitamin E in palm oil has a much higher biological activity than other vegetable oils, helping to reduce the risk of stroke.
Furthermore, palm oil contains 15 times more vitamin A precursors than carrots, and it has the ability to eliminate excess oxygen atoms. Containing no trans fats, palm oil is considered healthier and a perfect replacement for lard or butter. Song Thao palm oil is superior to many other common cooking oils when used in daily cooking: stir-frying, deep-frying, and salad dressing.
The product has been assessed and certified by relevant authorities as having a high content of antioxidants and various vitamins, with benefits for beauty, helping to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases, supporting blood sugar regulation in diabetic patients, and reducing the risk of obesity. Produced using modern machinery, Song Thao palm oil is refined, deacidified, decolorized, deodorized, and has been granted a certificate of food safety and hygiene.
Mr. Nguyen Anh Tuan, the owner of the production facility, shared: “With the desire to develop and bring vegetable oil products that meet all the criteria of being delicious, nutritious, affordable, and safe to consumers inside and outside the province, my family has invested in advanced machinery and equipment to improve product quality and production efficiency. Along with that, we have researched and designed attractive packaging and labels to meet customer demands. Participating in the OCOP product evaluation program is an important milestone to help our products reach further in the market and build trust in the hearts of consumers.”
After refining, the palm oil product is bottled in 100ml and 400ml containers and sold directly at the factory and through supermarket chains in the province and e-commerce platforms. In 2023, after deducting expenses, the production facility earned a profit of nearly 300 million VND, creating jobs for many local workers.
Palm fruit is used to produce essential oil.
Regarding the future development direction of the product, Mr. Nguyen Viet Xuan, Chairman of the People's Committee of Van Ban commune, said: "The local government will strive to coordinate with relevant agencies in providing technical guidance on palm tree care to further expand the raw material area to meet market demand. This will increase the income of the local people. We hope that our local products will increasingly spread to the market, be well-received by everyone, and contribute to bringing high economic value to the local OCOP products."
