Báo Gia đình và Xã hộiBáo Gia đình và Xã hội10/10/2024

Sore throat is a condition of sore throat, dull pain or pain when swallowing. Sore throat is not a disease but a common symptom when the upper respiratory tract is inflamed, due to gastroesophageal reflux or other diseases.

Some common types of sore throat include:

  • Sore throat with itching.
  • Pain in a fixed location in the throat (localized sore throat).
  • Pain accompanied by cough, fever or headache.
  • Pain, difficulty swallowing, hoarseness and loss of voice.
  • Sore throat with phlegm (sputum).
These types of sore throats are not too serious, can reduce the disease and inflammation without medical treatment.

What causes sore throat?

There are many causes of sore throat and pharyngitis, specifically:

- Due to allergies

Allergies are also one of the causes of sore throat. Many cases of allergies causing sore throat are due to exposure to allergens such as pollen, dirt, dust particles, mold, or chemicals that cause inflammation of the throat lining, causing sore throat and a feeling of swelling in the throat.

- Due to the weather

If the weather is dry like today, it will cause the throat lining to dry out, making it susceptible to damage and infection, leading to a sore throat.

- Due to exposure to cigarette smoke and chemicals

Exposure to cigarette smoke and chemicals in the air can irritate the lining of the throat, leading to inflammation of the lining, making the throat red and painful. In addition, these agents also cause recurrence or increase in sore throat, cough and difficulty breathing. Prolonged exposure to cigarette smoke and chemicals can cause chronic pharyngitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and even nasopharyngeal cancer.

- Due to cold, flu

If you have a cold or flu, it can cause a sore throat. Because when you have a cold or flu, the viruses in the upper respiratory tract will cause the throat to become inflamed, causing pain accompanied by tonsillitis, cough, fever, and runny nose. In addition, the virus can spread through the patient's nasal mucus and saliva in the air. Especially when the weather changes, sudden hot and cold weather with high humidity will make the body susceptible to the flu virus.

People who are susceptible to sore throats due to colds or flu include children, the elderly (especially those with underlying medical conditions), and people with weak or immunocompromised immune systems.

When suffering from a sore throat due to the flu, the patient should gargle with salt water or antiseptic solution, take fever-reducing and pain-relieving medicine. At the same time, it is necessary to get enough rest, increase resistance by eating well and taking vitamin supplements.

- Caused by group A streptococcus

Group A Streptococcus ( scientific name Streptococcus) is a type of bacteria that causes sore throat symptoms when it comes into direct contact with the patient's nasal and throat mucus. In addition, Streptococcus also causes some skin diseases, it can spread through open wounds, pus from infected skin ulcers.

Strep throat is a common disease, especially in children. Patients often have a high fever above 40 degrees, a sore throat when swallowing, swollen lymph nodes in the anterior neck, red rash, white pus swelling in the oral mucosa... When you have a sore throat due to streptococcus, you need to increase throat disinfection with saline, nasal and throat aerosol and see a doctor.

- Due to gastroesophageal reflux disease

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) can cause a sore throat. This is a condition in which stomach acid flows back up into the esophagus (the tube that connects the stomach and mouth). Frequent reflux can cause quite serious symptoms and health problems, including a sore throat. When stomach acid is constantly pushed up into the esophagus, it weakens the lining of the throat, leading to inflammation that causes swelling and pain, a feeling of fullness in the throat, and a dry cough.

- Due to pharyngitis

Granular pharyngitis is a long-term inflammation of the throat, causing the lymphoid tissue in the back wall of the throat to work overtime for a long time and swell. These swollen nodules are the size of a pinhead or larger. Granular pharyngitis is common in children, but adults can also get it. Granular pharyngitis can cause difficulty swallowing, sinusitis, cough... and other complications.

- Due to tumor in the throat

If you have a tumor in your throat, it will cause pain. Tumors in the throat and surrounding areas such as the thyroid gland can cause a sore throat and other symptoms related to the throat or digestive tract. Specific symptoms and conditions will depend on the type of tumor, its size, location, and the extent to which it affects surrounding muscles, tissues, and systems.

In summary: Sore throat is a common problem. When you have the above symptoms, you need to pay attention to oral hygiene, gargling with warm salt water... will help reduce pain and recover quickly. When you have a sore throat, you should choose soft, liquid, easy-to-swallow foods. Soft foods will not damage the thin and sensitive throat lining, and will help you swallow without feeling too uncomfortable.

In addition, you should increase your intake of vitamins and minerals to improve your resistance, especially vitamin C found in fruits such as grapefruit, oranges, vitamin B1, etc. If the condition does not improve or the sore throat lasts for more than 3 days, you should go to a medical facility for a doctor's examination and specific advice.
