Free swimming lessons
At the end of May 2025, the Cam Le District Youth Union coordinated with the Hoa Xuan Ward Summer Activities Steering Committee (Cam Le District) and Tran Dai Nghia Primary School to open a free summer swimming class for children. Vice Principal of Tran Dai Nghia Primary School Phan Cong Tin said that the participants in the summer swimming class are students in grades 3, 4, and 5 who are studying at the school and have not yet participated in swimming courses or have not yet obtained a certificate of safe swimming. The swimming classes take place throughout the summer, divided into 2 sessions: session 1 from June 2 to July 17; session 2 from August 18 to August 30.
Classes take place from Monday to Saturday every week, with 10 lessons per day. Each lesson lasts 45 minutes with no more than 7 students per teacher. There are 7 swimming instructors, who are physicaleducation teachers of the school with a swimming training certificate. In the first course, 21 students participated in swimming lessons. They were instructed by teachers and trained in swimming skills, survival skills for 30 seconds in water; methods to rescue drowning people, and how to prevent cramps. At the same time, they practiced and practiced techniques of breaststroke, backstroke, freestyle swimming, etc.
Just entering the summer vacation, Huynh Dang Khoi (grade 4/5, Tran Dai Nghia Primary School) was taken by his parents to register for a free summer swimming class organized by the school. Here, he was enthusiastically instructed by teachers on swimming techniques and survival skills if he accidentally fell into the water. Similarly, Dao Hong Vy (grade 5/9, Tran Dai Nghia Primary School) was registered by her family to learn swimming to make the summer vacation more meaningful.
In Hoa Vang district, with its terrain of many rivers, streams, ponds and lakes, there are many potential risks of drowning, especially during the summer vacation. The district's Department of Education and Training launched a movement to teach safe swimming and prevent drowning accidents in 2025. Immediately after the launching ceremony, 27/28 primary and secondary schools with artificial swimming pools in 11 communes simultaneously launched a movement to teach free swimming to all students, including parents in need.
According to the leader of the District Department of Education and Training, this year's summer swimming program is divided into 2 courses, each course enrolling 350 to 400 students. Participating in swimming classes, students are trained in basic swimming methods; some escape skills, how to float on the water surface for 30 seconds to wait for rescuers, first aid techniques for drowning people, etc. In particular, this year's swimming program focuses on improving quality, encouraging students to participate in many courses to improve swimming techniques, proactively escape when falling into unexpected situations.
Improve swimming skills
In parallel with teaching safe swimming, units and localities have increased the organization of swimming competitions and swimming contests to provide a useful playground and encourage the improvement of swimming skills among children and adolescents. Recently, the People's Committee of Hoa Xuan Ward (Cam Le District) coordinated with the Ward Youth Union to organize the 2025 swimming tournament for teenagers and children. The tournament attracted nearly 50 teenagers and children in the ward to compete.
The competition includes: male and female individual breaststroke, backstroke, distance 50m and 100m; relay and freestyle swimming, distance 4x25m. According to the leader of Hoa Xuan ward, this is an annual local sports activity to create a healthy and useful playground for students during the summer, contributing to improving physical fitness, practicing swimming skills and preventing drowning accidents. This is also an opportunity for the locality to discover and nurture young sports talents in the area, aiming to build a generation of young people who develop comprehensively in both physical and mental aspects.
Drowning accidents can happen anywhere, to anyone, so it is necessary to popularize safe swimming for all people. Cam Le District People's Committee has just launched a movement for all people to practice swimming to prevent drowning. Cam Le is a riverside locality, so equipping children and adolescents in particular and the whole population in general with swimming knowledge and skills is very urgent. District leaders call on all levels, sectors, localities, teachers, students and all people to join hands in mobilizing their children, friends and relatives to equip themselves with knowledge and skills to prevent and combat drowning; contributing to preventing and reducing drowning accidents. From there, we aim for the criteria of a safe community, safe family, and safe school.
The Department of Education and Training said that the city currently has 74/96 primary schools and 22/58 secondary schools with swimming pools that are funded by the city to teach swimming for free to students. At the end of each course, students take a final test. If they can swim 25m and float in the water for 9 seconds, they will be awarded a certificate of completion of the swimming course. If they fail, they will have to retake the course. |
