Free swimming lessons
At the end of May 2025, the Cam Le District Youth Union, in coordination with the Hoa Xuan Ward Summer Activities Steering Committee (Cam Le District) and Tran Dai Nghia Primary School, inaugurated a free summer swimming class for children. According to Phan Cong Tin, Deputy Principal of Tran Dai Nghia Primary School, the participants are students in grades 3, 4, and 5 currently studying at the school who have not previously taken swimming courses or obtained safe swimming certificates. The swimming classes run throughout the summer, divided into two sessions: Session 1 from June 2nd to July 17th; Session 2 from August 18th to August 30th.
Classes are held from Monday to Saturday each week, with 10 lessons per day. Each lesson lasts 45 minutes with no more than 7 students per instructor. There are 7 swimming instructors, all physical education teachers from the school who have swimming training certificates. In the first course, 21 students participated in swimming lessons. The students were guided and trained by the instructors in swimming skills, survival skills such as floating for 30 seconds in water, methods for rescuing drowning victims, and how to prevent cramps. They also practiced breaststroke, backstroke, and freestyle techniques.
As soon as the summer vacation began, Huynh Dang Khoi (grade 4/5, Tran Dai Nghia Primary School) was brought by his parents to register for a free summer swimming class organized by the school. There, he received dedicated instruction from teachers on swimming techniques and survival skills in case of accidental falls into the water. Similarly, Dao Hong Vy (grade 5/9, Tran Dai Nghia Primary School) was enrolled in swimming lessons by her family to make her summer vacation more meaningful.
In Hoa Vang district, characterized by its numerous rivers, streams, ponds, and lakes, which pose many risks of drowning, especially during the summer holidays, the District Department of Education and Training launched a campaign to teach safe swimming and prevent drowning accidents in 2025. Immediately after the launch ceremony, 27 out of 28 primary and secondary schools with artificial swimming pools in 11 communes simultaneously implemented the free swimming lessons for all students, including parents who wish to participate.
According to the head of the District Education and Training Department, this year's summer swimming program is divided into two courses, each enrolling 350 to 400 students. In these swimming classes, students learn basic swimming techniques; some escape skills, how to stay afloat for 30 seconds while waiting for rescue, and first aid techniques for drowning victims, etc. In particular, this year's swimming program focuses on improving quality, encouraging students to participate in multiple courses to enhance their swimming skills and proactively escape in unexpected situations.
Improve your swimming skills.
Alongside teaching safe swimming, units and localities are increasing the organization of swimming competitions and contests to provide beneficial recreational activities and encourage the improvement of swimming skills among young people. Recently, the People's Committee of Hoa Xuan Ward (Cam Le District) coordinated with the Ward Youth Union to organize the 2025 Children's Swimming Competition. The competition attracted nearly 50 children and teenagers from the ward to participate.
The competition included individual events for men and women in breaststroke and backstroke over distances of 50m and 100m; relay and freestyle events over 4x25m. According to the leaders of Hoa Xuan ward, this is an annual sports activity of the locality aimed at creating a healthy and beneficial playground for students during the summer, contributing to improving physical fitness, training swimming skills, and preventing drowning accidents. This is also an opportunity for the locality to discover and nurture young sports talents in the area, aiming to build a generation of young people who are comprehensively developed both physically and mentally.
Drowning accidents can happen anywhere, to anyone, making the promotion of safe swimming among the entire population essential. The People's Committee of Cam Le District has just launched a campaign encouraging all citizens to practice swimming to prevent drowning. Cam Le is a riverside locality, so equipping young people in particular, and the entire population in general, with swimming knowledge and skills is crucial. District leaders call on all levels, sectors, localities, teachers, students, and all citizens to join hands in encouraging their children, friends, and relatives to acquire knowledge and skills to prevent and combat drowning; contributing to preventing and minimizing drowning accidents. This aims towards the goal of a safe community, a safe family, and a safe school.
According to the Department of Education and Training, 74 out of 96 primary schools and 22 out of 58 secondary schools in the city currently have swimming pools that receive city funding to provide free swimming lessons for students. At the end of each course, students take a final test; if they can swim 25 meters and float in the water for 9 seconds, they will receive a certificate of completion. If they fail, they must repeat the course. |
