In accordance with Decision No. 2371 dated October 27, 2025, of the Prime Minister approving the Project "Making English the second language in schools in the period 2025-2035, with a vision to 2045," the education and training sector of the province has implemented many comprehensive solutions to improve the quality of foreign language teaching and learning, gradually building a school environment where English is used as a second language.
Currently, the province has over 209,000 students studying at 646 educational institutions. The quality of foreign language teaching is gradually improving; the focus is not limited to grammar and vocabulary but aims at the comprehensive development of listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. In the 2025-2026 school year, 79 preschools will introduce English to children; 404 secondary schools will implement English teaching according to the general education curriculum; and over 120,000 students at all levels will be required to learn English according to the 2018 general education curriculum.
Ms. Phan My Hanh, Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training, said: The Department has directed schools to proactively prepare the necessary conditions to gradually make English the second language in schools; encouraging the implementation of bilingual programs and collaborative teaching with foreign teachers in accordance with the practical conditions of the locality.
In addition, educational institutions are focusing on building a foreign language learning environment through English clubs, foreign language festivals, exchange and experiential activities; integrating digital transformation, technology applications, artificial intelligence, and digital learning materials into teaching.
As one of the six pilot schools implementing the project, Vinh Trai Secondary School organized model chemistry lessons taught in English. Tran Nam Trung, a student in class 8A10, shared: "Because we communicated and exchanged ideas entirely in English with the teacher, the lesson became more interesting; we not only absorbed knowledge but also practiced our listening, speaking, and thinking skills in English."
According to Distinguished Teacher Dang Tuan Cuong, Principal of Vinh Trai Secondary School, right from the beginning of the 2025-2026 school year, the school has developed a specific roadmap; trained 100% of teachers, with a particular focus on specialized English; and gradually increased the percentage of teaching Mathematics, Informatics, and Natural Sciences in English according to the roadmap.
At the high school level, many teachers are innovating their teaching methods. Mr. Cao Son Bac, a technology teacher at Viet Bac High School, said: "We don't 'force' students to immediately understand every complex vocabulary word; before class, teachers and students learn basic technical terms together so that the lesson is more natural and engaging."
Nong Gia Huy, a student in class 11A10 at Viet Bac High School, expressed: "Initially, we were quite worried because the subject had many specialized terms, but the teacher applied artificial intelligence and information technology to design visually engaging lectures, helping us absorb knowledge more effectively."
Making English the second language cannot be achieved overnight, but it is entirely feasible with determination, a clear roadmap, and the coordinated efforts of the entire education sector. Pilot models and experimental lessons have affirmed the responsibility, proactiveness, and creativity of the teaching staff, gradually building a learning environment where English is used naturally, regularly, and effectively.
