Brazilian football is going through a crisis. |
The decision, made by the Rio de Janeiro Court of Justice, caused shock waves in the country's football world, especially after the federation announced the appointment of Carlo Ancelotti as head coach of the national team.
The judgment is not appealable.
According to the decision of Judge Gabriel Zefeiro of the Rio de Janeiro Court, Ednaldo Rodrigues was removed from office for serious violations related to the legality of his return to power. The ruling is effective immediately and cannot be appealed.
"The Court decides: One, to dismiss the entire current Executive Board of the CBF; Two, to order Vice President Fernando José Sarney to convene the election of a new Executive Council, in compliance with the statutory deadlines," the judgment reads.
Mr. Fernando José Sarney will assume the role of CBF executive on an interim basis until new elections are held, which are expected no earlier than mid-June. During this period, Mr. Sarney will be responsible for the overall management of the federation's activities in accordance with Article 7 of the Organization's Statutes.
According to El Mundo Deportivo , the court concluded that Ednaldo's return to the previous presidency was illegal, based on irrefutable evidence related to the health condition of Antonio Carlos Nunes - one of the key signatories to the document that brought Ednaldo back to power.

President of the Confederation of Football (CBF) Ednaldo Rodrigues has been officially removed from the most powerful position of this organization. |
According to court records, Mr. Nunes was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor that severely affected his cognition and decision-making ability. The court affirmed: "Mr. Nunes was not competent to make decisions for himself at the time he signed the document. All of his actions were controlled by others and did not arise from his own free will."
With these findings, the Supreme Court declared the agreement between the parties - which had been previously approved - to be completely invalid, on the grounds of civil incapacity and suspicion of signature forgery.
When asked about the court's decision, Mr. Ednaldo appeared calm in the face of the situation. In an interview with UOL Esporte, the CBF President shared: "I am a resilient person in the face of false accusations. I just focus on my work, not letting myself be influenced by negative things."
He also expressed confidence in CBF's legal team: "On the legal side, CBF has a team of experienced lawyers who will do everything to ensure justice is served."
This is the second time since taking office that Mr. Ednaldo has been forced to step down as President, but this time with a ruling that is said to be irreversible.
The future is uncertain for Ancelotti?
This event took place just a few days after the CBF officially announced the appointment of Carlo Ancelotti as head coach of the Brazilian national team, making the future of the Italian strategist uncertain.
Coach Carlo Ancelotti has just been announced as the captain of the Brazilian national team. |
Multiple sources within the CBF have revealed that the announcement of Ancelotti was made rather hastily, possibly as a response to the legal troubles facing President Ednaldo. However, the federation is said to have prepared contingency legal options to keep Ancelotti in place in case Ednaldo is removed - which has now become a reality.
Currently, the relevant parties are still monitoring the situation and have not made an official statement about the future of coach Ancelotti. However, according to the plan, the Italian strategist is still expected to lead the Selecao in the two upcoming matches of the June international training camp, against Ecuador (June 6) and Paraguay (June 11).
This crisis comes at a sensitive time for Brazilian football. After consecutive failures at the 2022 World Cup and 2023 Copa America, fans are pinning their hopes on a turnaround under Ancelotti - one of the most successful coaches in world football history.
The federation's leadership turmoil could affect preparations for the 2026 World Cup, a tournament in which Brazil aims to regain international dominance after a 24-year wait.
Experts say the coming weeks will be crucial for the future of Brazilian football, as factions within the CBF begin campaigning for the upcoming elections. Fans can only hope that these changes will not affect the performance of Neymar and his teammates on the pitch.
