A seismic event has just hit Brazilian football as the President of the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF), Ednaldo Rodrigues, has been officially removed from his position as the organization's most powerful figure.

Brazilian football is going through a crisis.

The decision, made by the Rio de Janeiro Court of Justice, has sent shockwaves through the country's football circles, especially after the federation announced the appointment of Carlo Ancelotti as head coach of the national team.

The ruling is not appealable.

According to a decision by Judge Gabriel Zefeiro of the Rio de Janeiro Court, Ednaldo Rodrigues was dismissed from his position due to serious legal irregularities during his return to power. This ruling is effective immediately and cannot be appealed.

"The court ruled: First, to dismiss the entire current Board of Directors of CBF; Second, to require Vice President Fernando José Sarney to convene elections for a new Executive Board, in accordance with the legally mandated deadline," the ruling stated.

Fernando José Sarney will temporarily assume the role of CBF's CEO until new elections are held, which are not expected to be held any earlier than mid-June. During this time, Mr. Sarney will be responsible for managing all of the federation's operations in accordance with Article 7 of the organization's statutes.

According to El Mundo Deportivo , the court concluded that Ednaldo's return to his previous presidency was illegal, based on irrefutable evidence regarding the health of Antonio Carlos Nunes – one of the key signatories of the document that brought Ednaldo back to power.

Football Confederation (CBF) President Ednaldo Rodrigues has been officially removed from his position as the organization's most powerful figure.

According to court records, Mr. Nunes was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor that severely affected his cognitive abilities and decision-making capacity. The court stated: "Mr. Nunes was not competent to make his own decisions at the time of signing the document. All his actions were controlled by others and did not stem from his free will."

With these findings, the Supreme Court declared the agreement between the parties – which had been previously ratified – completely invalid, citing lack of legal capacity and suspected forgery of signatures.

When asked about the court's decision, Ednaldo remained calm in the face of the situation. In an interview with UOL Esporte, the CBF president shared: "I am resilient in the face of untrue accusations. I only focus on my work and do not let myself be distracted by negativity."

He also expressed confidence in CBF's legal team: "Legally, CBF has a team of experienced lawyers who will do everything they can to ensure justice is served."

This is the second time since taking office that Ednaldo has been forced to step down as president, but this time with a ruling that is considered irreversible.

A bleak future for Ancelotti?

This event occurred just days after the CBF officially announced the appointment of Carlo Ancelotti as head coach of the Brazilian national team, leaving the Italian strategist's future uncertain.

Coach Carlo Ancelotti has just been announced as the new head coach of the Brazilian national team.

Numerous sources within the CBF revealed that the announcement of Ancelotti was made rather hastily, possibly as a response to the legal troubles facing President Ednaldo. Despite this, the federation is believed to have prepared legal contingency plans to keep Ancelotti in place should Ednaldo be dismissed – which has now become a reality.

Currently, the relevant parties are still monitoring the situation and have not made an official statement regarding coach Ancelotti's future. However, according to the plan, the Italian strategist is still expected to lead the Selecao in the upcoming two matches during the June international break, against Ecuador (June 6th) and Paraguay (June 11th).

This crisis comes at a sensitive time for Brazilian football. After consecutive failures in the 2022 World Cup and the 2023 Copa America, fans are placing high hopes on a change under Ancelotti – one of the most successful coaches in the history of world football.

The leadership instability within the federation could affect preparations for the 2026 World Cup, a tournament where Brazil aims to reclaim its international dominance after a 24-year wait.

Experts believe the coming weeks will be a decisive period for the future of Brazilian football, as factions within the CBF begin campaigning for the upcoming elections. Fans can only hope that these changes will not affect the performance of Neymar and his teammates on the pitch.
