Speaking at the seminar "The Face of Vietnamese Cinema in the Renovation Era " within the framework of the 4th Da Nang Asian Film Festival (DANAFF IV) held yesterday, June 29th, managers, experts, and directors all agreed that after 40 years of renovation, Vietnamese cinema has made significant progress, but to break through and become a cultural industry, it still needs a sufficiently strong mechanism and a transparent creative environment.
From an international perspective, Jérôme Baron, Artistic Director of the Three Continents Film Festival and Chairman of the Jury for the Vietnamese Films category, believes that after many years of Vietnam's image being primarily shaped by Hollywood war films, the renewal of Vietnamese cinema has helped Vietnam reclaim the right to tell its own story. Works such as "The Girl on the River," "A Decent Story," "A Fairy Tale for Seventeen," "You and Me," and "The Traveling Circus " have shifted the focus from war to human destiny, transforming Vietnam from "the object of images created by others" to "the subject of its own images."

People's Artist Hoang Cuc shared her thoughts at a seminar about the film "Retired General ," a representative work of Vietnamese cinema during the đổi mới (renovation) period.

From a professional perspective, director Bui Thac Chuyen believes that Vietnam needs a comprehensive support mechanism to develop cinema into a cultural industry. Sharing his experience working on the post-production of the film "Underground Tunnel: The Sun in the Darkness" in Malaysia, he praised the country's comprehensive support system, from project development and production to distribution and the reimbursement mechanism for film crews, and expressed his hope that Vietnam would soon implement a Film Development Support Fund. Director Le Duc Tien emphasized that artists need to dare to innovate their thinking, while managers must shift from "controlling" to "creating," removing barriers to build a sustainable film ecosystem.
In his speech outlining development directions, Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Ta Quang Dong stated that in the current context, cinema needs to be seen as a field that converges culture, technology, and creative industries. According to him, new policies and guidelines are gradually perfecting the institutional framework, attracting investment, promoting public-private partnerships, promoting Vietnamese films, and supporting cinema's deeper participation in the global value chain. In the future, the Cinema Law will continue to be studied and amended to strengthen decentralization, simplify procedures, and create a favorable environment for creativity. According to Deputy Minister Ta Quang Dong, Vietnamese cinema needs to create works with high ideological and artistic value that are strong enough to conquer the market, telling Vietnamese stories using modern cinematic language, aiming to become a cultural industry with international competitiveness.
