In modern tourism development, beautiful scenery is no longer the only factor creating attraction. What makes tourists stay longer, remember the place, and want to return is often the cultural, historical, and legendary stories associated with the land they visit.
Ba Be Lake is not lacking in such stories. From the legend of the formation of Ba Be Lake, the folk myths of the Tay people to the legends about the mountains, forests, and rivers, all contain unique cultural values. However, these precious materials seem to have yet to be told in an engaging way to become a tourism product with widespread appeal.
During a visit to Ba Be Lake, Ms. Nguyen Thi Kim Oanh, Deputy Director of Dung Tan Co., Ltd., commented: "Tourists visiting Ba Be Lake still don't have many opportunities to access the stories associated with the lake area. Meanwhile, the legends about Ba Be Lake are a very valuable source of cultural information. For these stories to truly reach tourists, the joint efforts of all levels of government, relevant agencies, and the local community are needed."
According to Ms. Oanh, for many years, when mentioning Thai Nguyen, many tourists often remember Nui Coc Lake. One of the factors that creates a unique identity for this destination is the love story of Coc and Cong. This shows the power of storytelling in tourism development. A beautiful scenic spot may attract tourists once, but a good story can make them remember it forever and want to return.

| The unique cultural characteristics of the local communities are a strength of Ba Be. |
Currently, most tourists visiting Ba Be Lake mainly participate in activities such as boat trips to admire the lake, visit caves, waterfalls, or Widow's Island. They have few opportunities to delve deeper into the layers of cultural "sediment," folk legends, or stories of the daily lives of the local communities.
In reality, Ba Be Lake possesses abundant tourism resources, but these have not yet been truly transformed into in-depth experiences. The unique cultural values of the ethnic minorities are still present in their daily lives, but they have not been organized into sufficiently attractive products to make a strong impression on tourists.
While the lack of unique stories prevents Ba Be Lake from establishing its own distinct identity, the limited range of tourism products is a major reason for the low length of stay and spending of tourists.
Mr. Do Trong Hiep, Chairman of the Thai Nguyen Provincial Tourism Association, assessed: Ba Be Lake is a freshwater lake in the mountains with beautiful scenery, still retaining its pristine beauty and recognized by many international organizations as one of the world 's most impressive natural lakes. However, this advantage has not yet been exploited to its full potential. Ba Be needs to develop high-quality tourism products, upgrading services from the environmental landscape and hospitality to integrating cultural stories into the series of experiences for tourists.

| Tourists enjoy boat rides and sightseeing on the Năng River, in the Ba Bể Lake area. |
In reality, most tourism activities in Ba Be still revolve around sightseeing. After a few hours of boating on the lake or visiting some famous spots, many tourists choose to leave rather than stay for an extended period.
Meanwhile, Ba Be possesses enormous potential for developing community-based tourism, ecotourism, and cultural experience tourism. The Then melodies, the Tinh lute music, traditional festivals, handicrafts, local cuisine, and the daily life of the ethnic minorities can all become attractive tourism products if properly and professionally invested in.
Many experts believe that Ba Be needs to shift from a purely scenic exploitation mindset to an experiential one. Today's tourists not only want to admire nature but also want to live with the local community, listen to local stories, participate in cultural activities, and feel the rhythm of life of the lake dwellers.
Furthermore, another bottleneck is the limited connectivity between Ba Be and other destinations in the region. Expanding the development space after the merger will create favorable opportunities to form interconnected tourist routes, increasing the attractiveness of the destination. At the same time, the locality needs to strengthen coordination with press and media agencies to more effectively promote the image, products, and unique tours and routes of Ba Be.
In reality, Ba Be tourism has no potential, but it lacks competitive products and compelling stories to truly connect with tourists. When its cultural and scenic values are effectively exploited, coupled with systematic promotion and tourism development, the "green gem" of Ba Be will have more opportunities to shine and become an attractive destination on the Vietnamese tourism map.
