New developments in the case of a credit card holder who suddenly lost millions of dong in the middle of the night.

(NLĐO) - The bank announced it will refund money to two credit card holders who suddenly lost millions of dong despite not making any transactions.

On the afternoon of February 5th, Mr. NHT and Ms. TTTH (both residing in Ho Chi Minh City) - the credit card holders featured in the article "Credit card holders suddenly lose millions of dong in the middle of the night despite not making any transactions," published in the Nguoi Lao Dong newspaper on February 4th - announced that they had just received notification from the bank that they would be refunded.

According to Mr. NHT, the bank where he opened his account has just announced that it will refund the money lost from his international debit card account within the next few days. Previously, Mr. T. stated that on the night of January 31st and the early morning of February 1st, his credit card account repeatedly showed deductions for online transactions with the message "Outgoing money".

Because each transaction involved a small amount (25,275 VND), he did not register for SMS Banking and therefore did not receive transaction notifications. The transactions occurred between approximately 10:55 PM on January 31st and 4:55 AM on February 1st (the 3rd and 4th days of Tet), so he was unaware of them. It wasn't until the morning of February 1st, when checking his digital banking app, that he discovered his account had recorded 1,160 transactions, totaling nearly 29 million VND.

Customers' credit cards generated 1,160 overseas payment transactions on the night of the third day of Tet (Lunar New Year).

Similarly, Ms. TTTH recounted that on January 31st (the 3rd day of Tet), her card account suddenly showed 5 foreign currency transactions abroad, each for 179.8 USD. In total, nearly 900 USD (almost 23 million VND) was deducted from her account. These transactions also occurred in the early morning while she was in Vietnam, not making any transactions, and her credit card was still in her wallet.

"I didn't receive any information or OTP codes to confirm these transactions. I didn't give my card to anyone, and I rarely use my phone for online shopping, let alone for foreign currency transactions," Ms. H. questioned.

Immediately after the incident occurred, cardholders called the hotline to report the card being blocked and waited for the issuing bank to investigate the transaction.

Regarding the sudden deduction of funds from credit cards due to transactions occurring in the early morning or late at night, some financial experts believe that it is highly likely that customers' credit card information has been compromised for various reasons.

To avoid credit card information leaks, in addition to security measures, banks recommend that cardholders never disclose their CVV code to anyone, for any reason. When making online payments, cardholders should only transact on websites using the secure HTTPS protocol. These websites have a padlock icon and addresses starting with "https://", ensuring that data is encrypted and secure. Customers should register to receive transaction notifications for easier monitoring.

In case of suspected breach of card or bank account information, users should immediately notify the card issuer to have the card blocked. Cards can be blocked via the digital banking app; through the bank's hotline; or at a bank branch or transaction office.
