Flower float parade celebrating Buddha's Birthday

In Thua Thien - Hue , 32 floats decorated with scenes depicting the birth of Buddha Shakyamuni paraded through the streets of Hue on the evening of May 31st.

At 7 PM, 32 floats from Buddhist temples and pagodas in Thua Thien Hue province gathered on Le Duan Street, in front of the Phu Van Lau historical site. Besides decorations depicting the birth of Shakyamuni Buddha, many floats carried images related to Buddhism, including the image of Bodhisattva Thich Quang Duc – who self-immolated to protect Vietnamese Buddhism in 1963.

A procession of flower-decorated vehicles paraded through the northern streets of Hue city, from Le Duan Street to Tran Hung Dao, Huynh Thuc Khang, Mai Thuc Loan, Doan Thi Diem, Le Huan, Thach Han streets, and more. Thousands of Buddhists and local people lined both sides of the road to watch the procession.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Cat Tuong, 32 years old, from Hue City, said that compared to previous years, this year's floats were more elaborately and attractively decorated. She was most impressed with the float featuring the image of Bodhisattva Thich Quang Duc.

To celebrate Buddha's Birthday, the Executive Board of the Buddhist Association of Thua Thien Hue province also displayed seven giant pink lotus flowers on the Perfume River. The ritual bathing of the Buddha and the procession of the Buddha from Dieu De Pagoda to Tu Dam Ancestral Temple will also be held on the afternoon of June 1st (April 14th in the lunar calendar).

Buddha's Birthday commemorates the birth of Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha, in 624 BC. Previously, East Asian countries celebrated Buddha's Birthday on the 8th day of the 4th lunar month. Following the first World Buddhist Conference in 1950, 26 member countries adopted the 15th day of the 4th lunar month as Buddha's Birthday. In 1999, the United Nations recognized Buddha's Birthday as a world cultural and spiritual festival.
