THE MATCH OF A LIFETIME
On March 10, 2025, the entire nation of Cabo Verde erupted in joy as their national team defeated Eswatini 3-0 to officially secure their place in the 2026 World Cup , concluding the African qualifying round with the top spot in Group D, ahead of powerhouse Cameroon.
But perhaps even in that moment of jubilation, the most optimistic fans of this archipelago of over 500,000 people didn't dare dream of what the "Blue Sharks" are achieving at the 2026 World Cup. After their first two matches, they were undefeated against two former champions, including the strongest team in the world at the time, Spain , and former champions Uruguay. Not only that, coach Pedro Brito's team (nicknamed Bubista) was aiming for the extraordinary feat of defeating Saudi Arabia to secure their first victory and qualify for the Round of 32.

Self-belief helped Coach Bubista's team withstand the immense pressure from Spain. Playing against Uruguay, Cabo Verde showed they are not a team to be easily intimidated. On the morning of June 27th, their confidence will be even greater when they face a more evenly matched opponent, Saudi Arabia. Currently, the "Blue Sharks" have 2 points, so a victory would allow them to continue making history.
However, Saudi Arabia's chances of advancing (1 point) are still alive if they win, so this will be a very exciting match. Therefore, Saudi Arabia will play with high determination to overcome Cabo Verde.
C. PROACTIVE ATTACK
In the final round of matches played simultaneously, the results between Cabo Verde and Saudi Arabia, and Uruguay and Spain, will affect the qualification of all four teams. Spain holds a significant advantage in both points and morale, while Uruguay has only one option: a win. Lamine Yamal's impressive return on the right wing has helped La Roja's attack showcase its class. At center forward, Mikel Oyarzabal has demonstrated his effectiveness with two goals and one assist against Saudi Arabia. The only concern for coach Luis de la Fuente lies on the left wing, where Alex Baena, Gavi, and Ferran Torres are all struggling. Nico Williams may return to the starting lineup, but his form remains questionable. In fact, this is the biggest limitation that could prevent La Roja from winning the title this summer.
If Spain can replicate the stellar first half performance from their win against Saudi Arabia, it will be very difficult for Uruguay, as the South American team will be without Ronald Araujo and Giorgian de Arrascaeta due to injury.
If Uruguay wins against Spain by a minimal margin, Cabo Verde can realistically dream of topping Group H if they beat Saudi Arabia by two goals or more. To achieve this ambition, coach Bubista will need a sound strategy to force Cabo Verde to play at their preferred pace. The "Blue Sharks" possess the strength, speed, experience, and hunger of a quality squad, promising to add excitement for viewers.
Egypt vs. Iran; Belgium vs. New Zealand (10:00 AM on June 27th, live on VTV)
The situation in Group G is very exciting, with all four teams still having a chance to advance. Leading the group with 4 points, Egypt has a significant advantage, as they only need to avoid defeat against Iran to progress through the group stage. If Mohamed Salah and his teammates want to secure first place, they must win against Iran.
In the other match, the Belgian team had a rather slow start after two draws, so they will have to give their all to win against New Zealand. This will be a good opportunity for Byune, Lukaku, and others to shine and help Belgium advance from the group stage. However, if they are complacent and miss opportunities, Belgium could also suffer a bitter defeat, because New Zealand always knows how to make good use of their chances to score.
