Djokovic is still five titles behind Federer.

VnExpressVnExpress20/11/2023

With seven more titles this year, Novak Djokovic has raised his total number of individual championships to 98, just five titles behind Roger Federer.

Djokovic only played 12 tournaments in the 2023 season but won seven titles, including three Grand Slams, two Masters 1000s, and the ATP Finals. He solidified his position as the third most-won player on the ATP Tour. If he maintains this form, Djokovic will overtake Federer for second place next year.

Federer finished his career with 103 titles, six short of the record held by legend Jimmy Connors. Ivan Lendl ranked fourth with 94 titles, while Rafael Nadal had 92 wins.

Djokovic could soon surpass Federer if he participated in smaller ATP 250 or 500 tournaments. However, for the past three years, he has generally focused on Masters 1000 tournaments, Grand Slams, and the ATP Finals. Djokovic holds the record for most prestigious tennis tournaments with 24 Grand Slams, 40 Masters 1000 tournaments, and seven ATP Finals. Prior to this year's event, Djokovic and Federer shared the record of six ATP Finals titles.

If Djokovic plays for two more seasons and maintains this form, he could even surpass Connors' 109 ATP titles. In recent statements, the Serbian player has also affirmed that he will try to break as many records as possible. "Look at this guy, he can compete until he's 40," legend John McEnroe commented on Djokovic after the ATP Finals final on November 19th.

Prior to the ATP Finals, Djokovic finished the year as world number one for the eighth time – another record. At 36, he is the oldest player to achieve this. Before Djokovic, legend Pete Sampras finished the season at number one six times. Roger Federer, Jimmy Connors, and Rafael Nadal each have five times. The $4.4 million earned from the 2023 ATP Finals also makes Nole the first player to reach $180 million in prize money in tennis history.

Another memorable milestone for Djokovic this week is his 400th week at world number one. He will be the top seed at next year's Australian Open, entering the tournament with a 2,390-point advantage over second-placed Carlos Alcaraz. Djokovic is therefore highly likely to retain his top ATP ranking after the first Grand Slam of the year.
