On the morning of October 15th, at Viettel 's 5G service experience point in the Viettel Complex building (Cach Mang Thang 8 Street, District 10), after several 5G speed tests, the best results recorded by Tuoi Tre Online reporters were a download speed of 779 Mbps, an upload speed of 58 Mbps, and a latency of 20 ms.

Different location, different results.

On the afternoon of October 15th, the 5G speeds recorded in the area in front of the Caravelle Hotel (District 1) were only 101 Mbps for downloads and nearly 14 Mbps for uploads.

Surprisingly, the speed dropped to the intersection of Le Duan and Dinh Tien Hoang - Ton Duc Thang streets. 5G speeds fell to just under 36 Mbps for downloads and nearly 23 Mbps for uploads. These speeds are even slower than the average speed of current 4G services.

Earlier, on the morning of October 14th, in the Phan Xich Long street area (Phu Nhuan district), the best 5G speed recorded by Viettel network was over 360 Mbps, but the latency was as high as 28 ms. However, in the afternoon, on Tran Khac Chan street (Phu Nhuan district), the 5G speed only fluctuated between 125 - 250 Mbps, with a latency of about 29 ms.

In other areas, we also recorded varying 5G speeds, such as 280 Mbps near the University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City (District 5) and 250 Mbps on Nguyen Hue Street (District 1)...

The above measurement results from the real-world experience of Tuoi Tre Online reporters were taken with Viettel's 5G network, on the same smartphone device, using the same SpeedTest software from Ookla.

Comparison with 4G and wired internet.

According to the Internet access speed measurement system in Vietnam by the Vietnam Internet Center (under the Ministry of Information and Communications ), the average fixed (wired) Internet connection speed in September 2024 in Vietnam was nearly 99 Mbps for downloads, nearly 98 Mbps for uploads, with a latency of 10 ms.

In particular, the speeds of major network providers such as VNPT, Viettel, andFPT Telecom all fluctuate around the average figures mentioned above, with little difference. Only FPT Telecom has the lowest latency at 7.8 ms.

Smaller network providers such as CMC Telecom, SPT, NetNam, and SCTV all have significantly lower speeds than the average mentioned above. Specifically, NetNam's fixed-line internet service averages only around 41 Mbps (download) and 46 Mbps (upload), while SPT's averages are 52 Mbps and 46 Mbps respectively, the lowest among the aforementioned providers.

As for current mobile networks (primarily 4G), statistics from the Vietnam Internet Center in September 2024 show download speeds of nearly 54 Mbps and upload speeds of nearly 20 Mbps, with an average latency of 36 ms.

Therefore, if we choose the best recorded 5G speed (779 Mbps) for comparison, we can tentatively see that 5G speeds currently far surpass the average speeds of both wireless internet connections and 4G networks.

However, the latency of 5G connections is nearly 2-3 times that of average wired internet connections, while theoretically 5G latency could be almost zero.

Furthermore, the currently measured 5G speeds are only indicative of a specific point in time, while the wired connection speeds of the aforementioned carriers are average speeds and depend on the specific plan. Therefore, comparing 5G network speeds with current wired fixed-line internet speeds is only for reference purposes.

Viettel: speeds can reach 700 Mbps - 1 Gbps

According to Viettel's announcement at the launch event of its first commercial 5G service, Viettel's 5G network can achieve speeds of 700 Mbps - 1 Gbps, 10 times faster than 4G, with near-zero latency.
At the time of launch, Viettel's 5G network had more than 6,500 BTS stations, covering 100% of the capitals of all 63 provinces and cities, industrial zones, tourist areas, seaports, airports, hospitals, and universities.
