In Mu Cang Chai, the cottonwood flowers are in full bloom along the roads and on the hillsides at this time, attracting many tourists to the center of the commune. Many tourists said they had proactively booked rooms 1 or 2 weeks in advance to avoid overcrowding during the peak flower season and festivals.
According to Mr. Ho A Rua, a local tour guide and photographer, most accommodations in the town center are currently fully booked, and photography schedules at beautiful flower-filled spots such as Mi Hang village (Mu Cang Chai commune) and Trong Tong village (Pung Luong commune) are also fully booked until January 4th.
In Púng Luông commune, many tourists choose to stay in homestays on the high mountain slopes for convenient access to flower viewing, cloud watching, and experiencing the mountain forest atmosphere.
According to Thào A Su, the owner of a homestay on a mountaintop in Púng Luông commune, thanks to its location near the wild jasmine forest, the spacious surroundings, and the beautiful scenery, his establishment is frequently booked in advance by tourists. This time, many rooms have been booked about two weeks in advance and are currently fully booked until January 8th.
“During beautiful seasons like when the terraced rice fields are blooming or the flowers are in full bloom, many regular groups proactively contact us to book in advance. There was a group from Quang Ninh who has been here about 4 times; last year they came during the flower season and booked for the September 2nd holiday and New Year's Day this year,” Su shared, adding that the homestay welcomes many tourists from Hanoi and Quang Ninh during this period.
On this occasion, Mu Cang Chai commune is organizing the Mong Flute Festival, the To Day Flower Festival, and a series of activities to welcome the Spring of 2026, with the opening ceremony taking place on the evening of January 3rd at the commune's central stadium.
Mr. Le Xuan Duong, Head of the Culture and Social Affairs Department of Mu Cang Chai commune, said that most accommodation facilities in the commune center are currently fully booked. Anticipating a continued increase in the number of tourists, the local authorities are proactively developing plans to regulate and connect accommodation, and are ready to introduce qualified households to provide lodging for any additional visitors; strengthening service price management, ensuring security and order, and managing traffic flow during peak days.
In Sa Pa, the surge in tourists has caused localized traffic congestion on many roads in the town center and on routes leading to tourist destinations such as Cat Cat village.
Mr. Nguyen Huu Thinh, the owner of an accommodation facility in Sa Pa, said that most rooms in Sa Pa ward are fully booked, and neighboring communes such as Sa Pa, Ta Van, and Lao Chai are also experiencing a shortage of rooms.
"Because the New Year's holiday schedule was announced quite late, many tourists only booked rooms about 5 or 6 days in advance, so there were no accommodations left in the city center. Some had to travel to Lao Cai ward to stay overnight. Currently, many guests are still calling constantly, but we haven't been able to arrange rooms yet," Mr. Thinh said.
According to the People's Committee of Sa Pa ward, on January 1-2, the number of visitors staying in the area reached approximately 70,000 per day, with 100% occupancy; no instances of price gouging or inflated service prices were recorded; and functional forces were reinforced to control and manage traffic flow, ensuring safety for residents and tourists.
