A sad ending for Rashford

Marcus Rashford faces a sad ending at Old Trafford after irreconcilable differences with manager Ruben Amorim.

Rashford leaving Manchester United – something that not many fans had anticipated before.

The past two weeks at Carrington have been a tragicomic spectacle. Ruben Amorim had just driven away from Manchester United's training ground, only for Marcus Rashford to appear shortly afterward. This image clearly reflects the English star's predicament: sidelined, isolated, and the biggest face in the team's "outcast group."

It's hard to believe that the story of Rashford and MU ended this way. Once considered the new icon of the "Red Devils," Rashford is now outside of Amorim's plans.

The relationship between the two had long been strained, with Rashford declaring in December that he was “ready for a new challenge” just days after his last appearance for the club. The situation culminated in Amorim publicly stating in January that he “would rather choose a 63-year-old goalkeeping coach than have Rashford start.”

The loan deal to Aston Villa was a temporary escape for everyone. Rashford played reasonably well in the Midlands, proving himself and earning a recall to the England squad under manager Thomas Tuchel. But his heart still yearned for Barcelona – the club he had always longed to join.

This summer, Rashford returned to Carrington after a private training camp in Marbella. His presence immediately created an awkward atmosphere. The message from Manchester United was also clear: although Rashford was willing to train, he remained on the list of five players who would no longer train with the first team.

The story of "avoiding" Amorim with extra training sessions was nothing more than a game of hide-and-seek, indicating that their future together was over.

Aston Villa is just a temporary stop for Rashford.

The irony is that Manchester United are spending £130 million on Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, while Rashford, Garnacho, Sancho, and Antony – four players once worth a combined £330 million – are being pushed to the sidelines. This decline is particularly unacceptable for Rashford. He was once a gem of the academy, the pride of the fans, and was earning a massive £315,000 a week.

The problem isn't just about form. Rashford seems to have lost his love for the game at Old Trafford, losing the motivation that made him explode in the 2022/23 season. This period, which should be the peak of his career, has become a battle to rediscover himself.

However, time is still on Rashford's side. He's not yet 28 and still has the prime years of a striker's career ahead of him. Barcelona – a bigger stage, with greater ambition – could be the place to revive his career. If Barca can help Rashford rediscover his form and finalize a £40 million deal, it would be a real bargain.

Former Manchester United striker Teddy Sheringham recently quipped: "Moving from Man United to Barca was a step he didn't deserve."

However, considering the current situation, Barcelona is clearly on a higher level than Manchester United. Rashford has the opportunity to play alongside talents like Lamine Yamal, prove himself, and regain his place in the England national team ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Who knows, if Amorim fails to revive Manchester United, his successor might want to give Rashford a second chance. His career still has many chapters ahead, but it's time to move past the disappointments at Old Trafford and start a new journey.
