True Bangkok United accepts the possibility of losing, being fined, or facing disciplinary action. |
On the morning of December 15th, True Bangkok United sent a notification to the Southeast Asian Football Federation (AFF) stating that they would not be traveling to Cambodia to play their group stage match against Preah Khan Reach Svay Rieng, scheduled for January 29th, 2026.
According to Thai media, Bangkok United's move stems from escalating tensions at the border between Thailand and Cambodia. The club's management believes the current situation poses significant risks and does not guarantee the safety of players, coaching staff, and other members of the delegation if they have to travel and play in Cambodia.
In a letter sent to the AFF, True Bangkok United requested that the organizers reconsider the match venue, emphasizing that security should be the top priority. The club asserted that this was not a reactive or tactical decision, but stemmed from a responsibility to protect its players and the team's image.
Several alternative options were considered, including the possibility of moving the match to a neutral venue in another country. However, this option still faced considerable obstacles. According to regulations, Preah Khan Reach Svay Rieng is the home team and would have to bear additional organizational costs if the match were played elsewhere, thus complicating the negotiation process.
Notably, sources close to Bangkok United confirm the club's stance remains unchanged. The Thai team has stated that it will not play in Cambodia under any circumstances, even if it means facing the risk of forfeiture, penalties, or disciplinary action from the organizers.
Previously, Cambodia had repeatedly withdrawn from sporting events held in Thailand. They did not participate in the Southeast Asian U19 Futsal Championship and canceled all 12 events they had registered to compete in at the 33rd SEA Games.
