South Korea's group is considered to be of a manageable level. |
Japan is the biggest hope. The "Blue Samurai" were the first Asian team to qualify and showed top form in their end-of-2025 friendly matches, defeating Brazil, Ghana, and Bolivia. Their disciplined, fast-paced style of play and a group of players competing in Europe make them strong contenders to advance. Placed in Group F, Japan only needs to worry about the Netherlands, while the European representative from the play-offs and Tunisia are considered manageable opponents.
South Korea entered the World Cup with a solid foundation of experience. Son Heung-min, along with Lee Kang-in and Hwang Hee-chan, formed a strong enough squad to compete. South Korea was drawn into Group A with host nation Mexico and South Africa, who were not overwhelmingly superior opponents, while the team from the European play-offs didn't give the impression of being too dominant. This was the most balanced group for an Asian representative.
Australia faces even more doubts. Coach Tony Popovic's team possesses formidable physical fitness but lacks international stars. Facing the USA, Paraguay, and a European team, Australia's chances depend heavily on their familiar pragmatic approach.
Iran brings an energetic style of play, relying on technique and physical strength. However, facing Belgium and Egypt makes their journey in Group G a bumpy road. Only New Zealand is considered a formidable opponent that Iran must beat at all costs.
Saudi Arabia and Qatar are almost certain to face difficulties. Saudi Arabia is in the same group as Spain and Uruguay – two dominant forces. Qatar is also in Group B with Italy, Canada, and Switzerland, making their hopes of causing an upset very low.
The two World Cup newcomers, Uzbekistan and Jordan, face a real challenge. Uzbekistan must confront Portugal and Colombia, while Jordan will face Argentina, Algeria, and Austria. Everything seems overwhelming. Meanwhile, if Iraq makes it through the intercontinental play-offs, Group I with France, Norway, and Senegal could be a nightmare.
Overall, Japan and South Korea have the brightest prospects for the 2026 World Cup, while the rest face significant, even overwhelming, challenges.
