Korea's group is considered average. |
Japan are the biggest hope. The "Samurai Blue" was the first Asian team to qualify and showed top form in the friendly series at the end of 2025, defeating Brazil, Ghana and Bolivia in turn. Their disciplined play, speed and group of players playing in Europe make them a strong candidate to continue. In Group F, Japan only worries about the Netherlands, while the European representatives from the play-off round and Tunisia are both considered to be at par.
South Korea entered the World Cup with a solid foundation of experience. Son Heung-min, Lee Kang-in and Hwang Hee-chan formed a competitive squad. South Korea were drawn in Group A with hosts Mexico and South Africa, who were not too strong opponents, while the team from the European play-offs did not create a feeling of being too far apart. This was the most balanced group for an Asian representative.
Australia face more doubts. Tony Popovic’s team has a formidable physical foundation but lacks international stars. Against the US, Paraguay and a European team, Australia’s chances depend largely on familiar pragmatism.
Iran play an energetic, technical and competitive style of football. However, clashes with Belgium and Egypt have made Group G a bumpy affair. Only New Zealand is seen as an opponent Iran must beat at all costs.
Saudi Arabia and Qatar are almost certain to have a tough time. Saudi Arabia is in a group with Spain and Uruguay – two dominant forces. Qatar is also in Group B with Italy, Canada and Switzerland, making the chances of a surprise very low.
The World Cup newcomers Uzbekistan and Jordan are in for a real test. Uzbekistan face Portugal and Colombia, while Jordan face Argentina, Algeria and Austria. It’s all too much. Meanwhile, if Iraq make it through the intercontinental play-offs, Group I with France, Norway and Senegal could be a nightmare.
Overall, Japan and South Korea have the brightest path to the 2026 World Cup, the rest face big challenges, even beyond their reach.
