Mbappe's Caen is in crisis. |
Caen were relegated to the French third division (National 1) after finishing the 2024/25 season at the bottom of Ligue 2. The team won only 5 matches and had the worst defense in the league with 58 goals conceded.
According to RMC Sport , Caen are set to make massive cuts to tighten spending from the 2025/26 season. This is an inevitable move before the club enters a crucial assessment by the DNCG, the French Football Financial Supervisory Authority. The team could lose its status in professional leagues if it fails to stabilize its finances.
Caen are expected to reduce their operating budget from 15 million euros to around 8-10 million euros for next season in National 1. This is the first time since 1984 that Caen will not be in the top two divisions of French football. The club has been in Ligue 2 for six years, since being relegated from Ligue 1 in 2019.

Mbappe met Caen players in February. |
Kylian Mbappe bought 80% of Caen's shares through his investment company in July 2024. The decision to change 3 coaches in one season, including Nicolas Seube, Bruno Baltazar and Michel Der Zakarian, caused Caen to lose stability. None of the above coaches could save the situation for Caen.
Caen fans expressed their disappointment with Mbappe. They hung banners criticizing the star for the club's decline.
Meanwhile, Mbappe has yet to comment on the matter. He is currently training with the French national team to prepare for the upcoming Nations League semi-final against Spain in the early morning of June 6.
