Duc Lang commune is a semi-mountainous area, suitable for developing planted forests, orchards, and fruit trees. Taking advantage of this strength, the people here have invested in developing beekeeping for honey production, yielding relatively high incomes.

In 2024, to develop beekeeping for honey production in a systematic way, the Duc Lang Commune Beekeeping Association was established with nearly 50 members participating.

Thanks to technical training and study tours, the quality of bee colonies and honey produced by the association members has improved.

Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Vinh, head of the beekeeping association in Duc Lang commune, said: "Previously, beekeeping was very small-scale, with each household having only 1-2 bee colonies, making it difficult to find markets and resulting in low efficiency. After the commune established the association, members have focused on investing in and developing the profession very strongly. Members receive technical training, visit and learn from others to share experiences and scientific and technological advancements to develop both bee colonies and honey quality."

Mr. Pham Ngoc Thang (Ha Cat village, Duc Lang commune) has extensive experience in beekeeping. Since joining the association, he has accumulated even more valuable experience to develop his family's business.

"I myself have learned a lot of experience in beekeeping from the members; I have received training from the professional sector on effective beekeeping techniques, colony splitting techniques, and breeding. This year, my family is raising 50 colonies, and so far most of them are producing very good honey. We expect to earn about 200 million VND from this honey harvest," Thang shared.

Meanwhile, Mr. Nguyen Van Son (Ha Cat village), who has been involved in beekeeping for over 10 years, also has 40 bee colonies, earning an income of 120-150 million VND per year. In addition to income from honey, he also sells 25-30 bee colonies at an average price of 800,000 to 1 million VND per colony.

Mr. Son said: “Beekeeping has low investment costs, the initial investment is not large, and it doesn't require much land. Thanks to participating in the association, I have accumulated and learned a lot of experience, from improving the growth quality of bees to the honey production process... For me, beekeeping not only helps increase income but also brings joy in old age, so I am also very happy to share my experiences with the households and young members.”

According to beekeepers in Duc Lang commune, the most suitable time for dividing and multiplying bee colonies is in March and October. In addition, bees have a very high social organization and are sensitive to external factors such as weather, light, and temperature. Therefore, beekeepers must understand the basic characteristics of bees, take appropriate measures to protect them from cold and heat, and regularly clean the beehives to ensure they are dry and clean. Only then will the bee colonies be healthy and produce the best quality honey.

Duc Lang commune currently has 600 hectares of hilly land, including 180 hectares of fruit orchards. With this advantage, beekeeping for honey production is considered a suitable occupation for developing household economies . The entire commune has 75 households raising bees with nearly 1,000 colonies, yielding an average annual production (harvesting for 7 months) of nearly 30 tons of honey.

After harvesting, honeybees can either sell their pure honey immediately or store it until prices are favorable.

To promote beekeeping and ensure stable product output, the Farmers' Association of the commune is coordinating with the Beekeeping Professional Association to develop Duc Lang honey products to achieve OCOP 3-star certification. This will change traditional beekeeping practices and gradually improve honey quality. Importantly, it will give farmers confidence to invest in developing their bee colonies, making honey one of the locality's key agricultural products and expanding the Duc Lang honey brand to a wider market.
