After missing a penalty in the match against Austria on the morning of June 23rd, Lionel Messi redeemed himself with his 17th World Cup goal, becoming the highest scorer in the tournament's history and surpassing the record of 16 goals held by former German striker Miroslav Klose.
In the final minutes of injury time, Messi completed his brace to bring his total number of goals in World Cups to 18.

A milestone was set during the match between Argentina and Austria when Messi wore the Adidas F50 Messi Elite El Último Tango . This is a signature model that combines the design of the shoes Messi used in his first World Cup appearance in 2006 with modern technology.
The flowing lines, including the Three Stripe pattern and the blue, white, silver, and gold color scheme, are inherited from the +F50.6 Tunit Argentina edition that the legendary footballer (GOAT) wore 20 years ago.

The words "El Último Tango" (meaning: The Last Tango) are printed on the outsole. The shoe also features many personalized details such as the names and birth dates of Messi's three children - Ciro, Thiago, and Mateo - on both sides of the shoe; the Argentinian flag on the left heel and his familiar number 10 on the right heel.
To celebrate this historic achievement, Adidas posted campaign images featuring Messi, his special shoes, and the balls associated with each World Cup he's participated in, along with the caption "Record Breaker. History Maker" and the goat icon – alluding to his GOAT (Greatest of All Time) title.

The legendary jersey
The Argentinian superstar also drew attention by appearing in a personalized jersey featuring four commemorative badges specially awarded by FIFA, making it a unique design at this year's World Cup.
The badge set includes: the FIFA World Champion emblem to commemorate Argentina's 2022 World Cup victory; gold sleeve badges for former World Cup-winning teams; the Legacy badge marking Messi's sixth World Cup appearance – an unprecedented record; and the Golden Ball badge, recognizing his title as the best player of the 2022 Qatar World Cup.

Messi's journey at the biggest football tournament on the planet has spanned two decades. He made his World Cup debut in 2006 as a teenager and immediately scored on his first appearance. Twenty years later, in his sixth World Cup, Messi remains a game-changer.
The 2022 World Cup is still considered the most glorious chapter in his international career, as he led Argentina to victory with seven goals and three assists.
At this year's tournament, Messi continued to maintain his impressive form, including a hat-trick against Algeria in the group stage.

Before the match, coach Ralf Rangnick had warned his players about Messi's incredible ability to find space. Those concerns quickly became a reality as the Argentinian captain constantly pressured Austria's defense.
Messi acknowledged that this was a tense and challenging encounter, and emphasized the intense nature of the World Cup at this stage of his career.
With his 39th birthday approaching, this year's tournament is widely seen as Messi's last World Cup, although his current form suggests otherwise.
