Innovation for efficient shrimp farming.

Ca Mau Newspaper Dam Doi district has the largest aquaculture area in the province, with over 62,000 hectares. However, due to various factors, the production of local people has been affected. Therefore, in recent times, farmers in the district have innovated and succeeded with many effective production models, including many new initiatives and good practices that have been and are being replicated throughout the district.

Currently, the district has 50 hectares of intensive shrimp farming with 155 farming households, and over 1,542 hectares of super-intensive shrimp farming with more than 2,006 farming households. Compared to the past, the area of super-intensive shrimp farming has developed quite rapidly due to its high economic efficiency, averaging 25-30 tons/hectare/season.

Mr. Pham Minh Dien, from Nam Chanh hamlet, Ngoc Chanh commune, who has been raising STC shrimp for nearly 3 years, said: "With over 20,000 m2 of production land, I planned to use 12,000 m2, of which I invested in 4 ponds, each 800 m2, with the rest used for storage and wastewater ponds. Each year I raise 2 crops, each time stocking 300,000 shrimp fry worth over 45 million VND, with a stocking density of 100 shrimp/m2. In 2024 alone, my family harvested over 20 tons of shrimp, with sizes ranging from 20-50 shrimp/kg, selling at 100-150,000 VND/kg, earning a profit of over 500 million VND."

Mr. Dien is currently raising shrimp in two ponds for over 2.5 months. The shrimp are developing well, reaching a weight of 45 shrimp per kilogram. He plans to harvest them when they reach 30 shrimp per kilogram. Mr. Dien shared his experience: “You have to invest properly, with all the necessary equipment from electricity to fans and oxygen... Besides that, you need to choose good quality shrimp fry and carefully check the water quality. In addition, I proactively treat shrimp diseases using various methods and techniques that I have researched during the farming process, so it has initially yielded positive results.”

Besides the traditional shrimp farming model, farmers in the district also implement many improved shrimp farming models such as: improved high-yield extensive shrimp farming; shrimp farming with minimal water changes combined with pond drying and crop rotation, and the use of microorganisms. These are some of the models that bring relatively high economic efficiency to farmers.

After a period of ineffective traditional shrimp farming, Mr. Trinh Hoang Nghia, from Tan Thanh hamlet, Tan Duyet commune, switched to an improved two-stage extensive shrimp farming system more than two years ago. With 2.2 hectares, he releases 20,000-30,000 shrimp fry once a month. When harvested, the shrimp reach post-larvae size 10-11, then are raised for about 10 days until they reach post-larvae 18-20 before being released into the ponds. The shrimp survival rate is over 90% compared to traditional farming. Each month, he sets traps to catch shrimp twice, yielding about 50-60 kg of shrimp, with the shrimp weighing 20-16 shrimp per kg.

Primarily selling live tiger prawns, Mr. Nghia earns a profit of over 20 million VND per month from selling live prawns at a price of around 320,000 VND/kg (16 prawns per kg). When the water level drops, he adds surface water and uses microorganisms to stabilize the environment and create natural food for the ponds. In addition, he releases about 1,000 crabs each month, earning over 5 million VND per month from crab farming.

Mr. Nghia shared: “Previously, shrimp farming was profitable, but recently, due to water pollution, the efficiency has decreased. Therefore, the family decided to switch to a model with less water changes. This model has yielded positive results, and our economic situation is becoming more stable than before. The family will maintain this model in the future.”
