During our journey to Tan Son village, Son Dien commune, Quan Son district, we were amazed by the dramatic transformation of this area. Previously, Tan Son was one of the poorest villages in the commune and among the poorest in the district, with very difficult living conditions for its people. But now, walking along clean concrete roads, admiring the sturdy houses built close together, and listening to the joyful laughter echoing across the lush green fields, we see the fruits of ethnic minority policies that have invested in the village and its people, transforming this once impoverished land...
Tan Son village currently has over 600 inhabitants, mainly Muong and Thai people. The Party Secretary and village head, Luong Van Tu, happily shared: "Previously, the villagers relied solely on bamboo cultivation, resulting in unstable income. But thanks to government support and economic development incentive programs, many households have boldly switched to different crops and livestock, expanding their production and business models. Currently, the average income reaches 32 million VND per person per year, significantly higher than before."
A prime example of a family rising to prosperity in the village is that of Mr. Luong Van Ung (born in 1970). Previously, his family only raised pigs on a small scale for family consumption, but thanks to access to preferential loans and learning from experienced livestock farmers, he boldly expanded his model. Currently, his total pig herd ranges from 25 to 30 animals, combined with rice cultivation and the exploitation of non-timber forest products, bringing in an annual income of 100 to 130 million VND.
"I'm planning to expand my livestock farming operation and dig ponds for fish farming to improve economic efficiency," Ung said.
In the village, Mr. Ha Van Nien (born in 1983) is also one of the exemplary successful entrepreneurs. Besides growing bamboo, he has also invested in renovating his pigpens and raising breeding pigs. Thanks to adhering to safe farming practices, his herd of over 20 pigs is thriving and is expected to generate revenue of over 120 million VND this year.
"Local authorities and specialized departments regularly organize training courses and provide technical support to help farmers improve the efficiency of livestock farming and production," Mr. Nien said.
Besides economic development, Tan Son village has also witnessed positive changes in awareness and lifestyle. Mr. Vi Van Phuc, a respected figure in the village, has always been at the forefront of local movements, from economic development to maintaining security and order. He has actively encouraged villagers to change their business mindset, eliminate outdated customs, and build a civilized life. At the same time, he has encouraged villagers to boldly borrow capital from the Social Policy Bank to invest in developing economic models. As a result, many livestock farming models have emerged and developed in the village, helping villagers to have a stable source of income.
Thanks to timely government support policies, the determination of the local authorities, and the aspirations of the people, this area has made significant progress in economic development and improving the quality of life. Instead of relying solely on bamboo as before, the villagers now know how to raise livestock, produce crops, and grow vegetables.
Mr. Pham Nhat Quang, Chairman of the People's Committee of Son Dien commune, assessed: "Although Tan Son village was established later than other villages in the commune, it has experienced remarkable development. In particular, the village is free from social vices, security and order are ensured, and 100% of school-aged children attend school. The material and spiritual lives of the people are gradually improving. The number of poor households has decreased from 57 in 2023 to 29 at the end of 2024, and many households have become well-off."
To maintain this momentum, the Party Committee and the local government of Son Dien commune continue to implement many support programs for the people, such as expanding production models, creating conditions for accessing preferential loan capital, and providing vocational training. Along with that, the self-reliance and the daring spirit of the people of Tan Son are important factors helping the village to prosper.
Leaving Tan Son village, we carried with us beautiful images of a rural area changing day by day. It's the journey out of poverty for dozens of families here over the past year, a true story of the aspirations of a village once among the poorest in Son Dien border commune and Quan Son district.
