Changes in the highlands of Mu Cang Chai

Visiting Mu Cang Chai (Yen Bai province) in the middle of winter, the temperature at the summit of Khau Pha pass was a biting 7 degrees Celsius. On the mountain slopes, the red blossoms of the wild peach tree (a type of wild peach) bloomed profusely, standing out against the lush green mountains, signaling the arrival of a new spring in this still challenging land. Along the village roads, many new houses built under the local "Eliminating Dilapidated Houses" project have been completed, bringing joy to the people here.

We climbed the steep slopes to La Pán Tẩn commune, home to the famous "Golden Raspberry Hill" on Vietnam's tourism map. Meeting Lý A Nhà, the Party Secretary of La Pán Tẩn village, he told us that the entire village has 16 households engaged in homestay tourism, and many people working as tour guides and motorbike taxi drivers have received training in tourism skills and food safety, creating livelihoods in the local area.

The people of the mountains and forests have preserved and developed the heritage left by their ancestors, contributing to improving the lives of their villages. Besides domestic tourists, foreign visitors also enjoy experiencing local tourism products such as plowing fields, fishing, and processing local products.

Mr. Trinh The Binh, Head of the Culture and Information Department of Mu Cang Chai district, happily stated: "With many beautiful landscapes such as the raspberry hill, bamboo forest, dinosaur spine, especially the Che Tao species and habitat conservation area, Khau Pha pass..., along with unique cultural features, deeply rooted in the cultural identity of the H'Mong and Thai ethnic groups... Mu Cang Chai is attracting a large number of tourists."

In the coming time, the district will develop new, distinctive tourism products such as the H'Mong Khen Festival, the To Day Flower Festival, the New Rice Festival, the Son Tra Festival, etc., attracting domestic and international tourists to explore and experience, aiming to build Mu Cang Chai into a tourist district, a destination that is "distinctive, safe, and friendly" in Yen Bai province and the Northwest region.

District Party Secretary Giàng A Câu joined us in visiting the medicinal mushroom cultivation model of Mù Cang Chải Edible and Medicinal Mushroom Production Company Limited in Hua Khắt village.

Since 2022, the company has boldly invested over 10 billion VND in building a mushroom production facility on a total area of 4 hectares. On average, it harvests and sells over 250 tons of shiitake mushrooms to the market each year, generating over 20 billion VND in revenue.

The company provides regular employment for nearly 50 local workers, with salaries ranging from 4.5 to 6 million VND per person per month. In addition to mushroom cultivation, the company also grows sprouts, sweet peppers, and off-season vegetables, creating more jobs and diversifying products to serve the menu for tourists.

We visited a tomato farming model in La Khat and Cang Dong villages, Nam Khat commune, covering an area of over 9 hectares. This is the Beef tomato variety, originating from Israel, which is widely cultivated and yields a high output of over 50 tons per hectare, generating an income of approximately 1.8 billion VND per hectare and providing employment for 50 workers.

Giang A Cau, Secretary of the District Party Committee, affirmed that if every commune were like Nam Khat, mobilizing local labor resources, producing distinctive products (tomatoes, flowers, mushrooms, temperate vegetables), and integrating production and consumption into a synchronized chain, then the people in the highlands would no longer be poor.

Besides cultivating mushrooms, tomatoes, and temperate green vegetables, Nam Khat commune now has 75 hectares of rose cultivation with 21 households participating. The average yield is approximately 190,000 flowers per hectare, generating an income of about 300 million VND per hectare and creating jobs for 350-400 local laborers.

According to the Chairman of the People's Committee of Thào A Phênh commune, thanks to the transformation of the economic model to suit the soil conditions, people have leased their land to businesses, many households have found employment, and the lives of the people have improved significantly. With investment capital from poverty alleviation programs, roads to villages such as Nả Khắt, Pú Cang, Xua Lông, Páo Khắt... have been paved with concrete, and 100% of households use the national power grid.

The primary and secondary schools were newly built with a 30 billion VND grant from the Vietnam Investment and Development Commercial Bank, providing children of the H'Mông ethnic minority in the commune with a spacious and modern place to study.

Walking amidst the vast mountain forests, surrounded by the deep green of the seemingly endless pine forests, one can truly appreciate the sustainable forest conservation efforts of the local people. Every year, thanks to forest management implemented down to the household, group, and community level, the people of Mu Cang Chai receive over 50 billion VND from the Forest Protection and Development Fund. The abundant water from the headwaters allows the hydroelectric power plants on the Nam Kim, Nam Mu, and Da Rivers to operate at full capacity. With nature and people living in harmony, Mu Cang Chai is steadily transforming and developing.
