Türkiye (in white shirts) were a huge disappointment. |
The only goal of the match came very early. In the 2nd minute, Mathias Galarza sent the stadium into a frenzy with a thunderous long-range shot from outside the penalty area, giving goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakır no chance to save it. The goal was scored just 65 seconds into the game, making it the fastest goal of the 2026 World Cup to date.
Having conceded an early goal, Türkiye were forced to push forward in attack. Coach Vincenzo Montella's team dominated possession and created numerous dangerous opportunities. However, their lack of sharpness in finishing continued to cost them dearly.
In the 33rd minute, Mert Muldur's header hit both the crossbar and the post, much to everyone's disappointment. In the second half, Arda Güler, Kenan Yıldız, Deniz Gül, and Can Uzun all had chances but couldn't beat the Paraguayan defense and the excellent performance of goalkeeper Orlando Gill.
Towards the end of the first half, Miguel Almiron received a direct red card after VAR intervention. The Paraguayan star was found to have violated FIFA's new rule regarding covering one's mouth during arguments with opponents, leaving the South American team to play with ten men for the entire second half.
However, the numerical advantage did not help Türkiye turn the tide. The European representatives continued to struggle in front of the opponent's goal and ended the match empty-handed.
This defeat meant Türkiye were eliminated in the group stage. After two matches, they lost both to Australia and Paraguay, failing to score a single goal while conceding three. Meanwhile, the USA have a perfect 6 points, while Paraguay and Australia are both ranked higher.
Even if Turkey beat the USA in the final match, they would still be unable to compete for a spot as one of the eight best third-placed teams due to losing head-to-head matches against both Australia and Paraguay.
