Kaspersky has proposed a practical and smart solution that users need to add to their 2024 suite: Protecting personal data by cleaning up digital clutter.
Digital clutter is a result of the digital age, occurring as users of devices create digital documents and files at an uncontrollable rate.
Users install more apps than they actually use, rarely update them, and often fail to properly adjust the security/privacy settings of these apps. This means that digital clutter is stored on devices or in the cloud indefinitely. All of this creates "digital mess."
Furthermore, poor device content maintenance by users also creates clutter in the digital space. Kaspersky data shows that 55% of users regularly modify content on their devices and delete unused documents and applications. In 32% of cases, users occasionally organize their digital data piles, and 13% of users do not delete any documents or applications. A Kaspersky report shows that the top 5 data types commonly stored on devices are regular photos and videos (90%), travel photos and videos and personal emails (each at 89%), address/contact information (84%), and personal SMS/IM messages (79%).
The clutter in the digital space also leads to cybersecurity incidents. From ransomware attacks to data leaks that compromise public data and personal financial information.
Yeo Siang Tiong, General Manager for Southeast Asia at Kaspersky, said: “I think we should start small until it becomes a habit. A few simple changes at first will help a lot in protecting ourselves and our personal data.”
Kaspersky also suggests users take the following tips to ensure safety in the digital space this new year: Apple, Google, and Microsoft have all introduced passwordless login features, and users should utilize them; stay away from harmful social media; limit social media browsing; and separate personal and work lives in cyberspace...
