For the 2025-2026 school year, the province will have 37 high schools with approximately 9,600 students admitted to grade 10. According to regulations, each grade 10 student must choose four elective subjects, in addition to the compulsory subjects: Mathematics, Literature, Foreign Language, History, Physical Education , National Defense and Security Education, career guidance activities, and local education. Recognizing the importance of choosing the right subject combination, high schools throughout the province have proactively organized counseling and guidance sessions for grade 10 students since the beginning of July.
For example, at Huu Lung High School, which has a large enrollment of nearly 800 10th-grade students for the 2025-2026 school year, the school has implemented early and systematic counseling. Based on the school's facilities, teaching staff, and students' aspirations, the school has developed five subject combinations. In addition, at the beginning of July, the school gathered all newly admitted 10th-grade students to distribute subject combination registration forms; organized class meetings to disseminate information, and through these meetings, homeroom teachers and subject teachers provided direct counseling, helping students carefully consider their options before making a choice.
According to research conducted at high schools throughout the province, based on the teaching staff, facilities, and class organization capabilities, each school organizes 5 to 8 subject combinations, divided into two basic groups: natural sciences and social sciences.
At the Provincial Ethnic Boarding High School, this year there are 180 tenth-grade students. During the first orientation session for these students, the school not only received applications but also organized a general orientation session, clearly introducing the new general education program, analyzing each subject combination, and providing corresponding career guidance. Ms. Nguyen Thanh Thao, the school's Vice Principal, stated: “The counseling team not only introduced the program but also analyzed the teaching conditions at the school and career trends. This helped students and parents better understand and choose the appropriate subject combination.”
At Viet Bac High School, the school also implemented a subject combination selection counseling program this July. With over 500 tenth-grade students this academic year, the school has developed six subject combinations, comprising two main groups: social sciences (Literature, History, Geography) and natural sciences (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry). Based on the published subject combination framework, homeroom teachers and the counseling team collaborate to guide students in class discussions, distribute registration forms, and provide direct counseling for each individual case. Student Banh Phuong Diep, a tenth-grade student, shared: “The teachers advised and introduced me to combination 1 (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry), which includes my strong subjects, Mathematics and Chemistry. I confidently chose this combination and hope that it will help me choose a university that suits my aspirations in the future.”
Beyond initial counseling, after students choose their subject combination, homeroom teachers continue to monitor their academic progress and psychological well-being, providing timely feedback and adjustments as needed. Furthermore, throughout the school year, schools regularly organize career guidance activities through class meetings, experiential learning, and career orientation workshops, helping students solidify their choices and gain a deeper understanding of the learning path and requirements of each field of study in the future.
According to the plan, by the end of July 2025, high schools in the province will complete the registration of subject combinations for 10th-grade students. Early counseling, systematic organization, and close support from schools not only help students choose suitable subject combinations and develop their strengths, but also facilitate schools in proactively developing teaching plans, selecting textbooks, and preparing fully for the new school year according to schedule.
