The Cay Noi sticky rice product from Chung Thanh Agricultural and Forestry Cooperative, Quang Chieu commune, is popular with consumers.
Preserving and promoting the value of indigenous glutinous rice varieties.
Sticky rice is not only a staple food but also an integral part of the cultural life of the ethnic groups in the province. Sticky rice is an indispensable dish at holiday meals, weddings, and ancestral worship ceremonies. In previous years, due to the pursuit of high yields, the cultivation area of some indigenous sticky rice varieties was reduced. However, as market demand increasingly favors specialty agricultural products, many localities have restored and redeveloped traditional sticky rice varieties. According to Le Minh Cong, Director of the Ha Long Commune Agricultural Service Cooperative: “The 'Nếp Cái Hoa Vàng' rice variety, a famous tribute to the emperor in the past, has been replanted in the fields of Ha Long. This variety is well-suited to the soil and climate of this region, resulting in very fragrant and sticky rice grains. After nearly 20 years of restoration and development, the total area of 'Nếp Cái Hoa Vàng' rice cultivation in Ha Long commune has increased to over 200 hectares, with a total production of nearly 1,000 tons per year. In 2020, Gia Mieu Ngoai Trang's 'Nếp Cái Hoa Vàng' rice from the cooperative was ranked as a 3-star OCOP product.”
Thanks to numerous efforts in preserving valuable genetic resources, the province still preserves many specialty glutinous rice varieties such as: glutinous rice with betel nut seeds, glutinous rice with golden flowers, glutinous rice with Cay Noi variety, and black glutinous rice varieties like Khau Phao, Khau Mac Khen, Khau Puoc, Khau Pe Leng... In addition, many high-yield, high-quality glutinous rice varieties for processing are produced through partnerships between businesses and farmers in communes such as Trieu Son, Hoang Hoa, Nga Son, Yen Dinh... such as N97, N98, DT 52, A Sao, fragrant glutinous rice, fragrant glutinous rice 86, KING 6, golden glutinous rice 1, Co Tien glutinous rice, Nhung glutinous rice... Each rice variety has its own unique flavor, suitable to the ecological conditions of each region, creating diversity in Thanh Hoa's glutinous rice products.
According to the Thanh Hoa Agricultural Institute, Thanh Hoa province is one of the localities with rich glutinous rice genetic resources in the North Central region. Preserving and developing indigenous glutinous rice varieties not only contributes to the preservation of valuable genetic resources but also creates distinctive agricultural products with high economic value.
Developing specialized cultivation areas and enhancing the value of glutinous rice.
To effectively exploit the potential of specialty glutinous rice varieties, many localities in the province are gradually forming concentrated production areas. In the high mountainous communes of the province, Cay Noi glutinous rice is identified as one of the key crops that bring high economic value. The annual area planted with glutinous rice in these localities is hundreds of hectares, mainly concentrated in the communes of Quang Chieu, Muong Chanh, Tam Chung, Quan Son, Na Meo... Quang Chieu commune alone has developed more than 300 hectares of Cay Noi glutinous rice, creating a fairly stable production area. According to Ms. Luong Thi Nong, Director of Chung Thanh Agricultural and Forestry Cooperative in Quang Chieu commune: “The yield of Cay Noi glutinous rice variety averages about 45-50 quintals/hectare. Although not as high as many hybrid rice varieties, thanks to good selling prices, the economic efficiency is quite stable. Currently, the cooperative is linked with more than 30 households in the commune to produce Cay Noi glutinous rice on about 200 hectares. In 2021, with many efforts, the cooperative's Cay Noi glutinous rice product was ranked as a 3-star OCOP product at the provincial level.”
Not only in mountainous areas, but also in many midland and lowland localities of the province, the cultivation of specialty glutinous rice varieties is being developed. Suitable land areas are being planned for concentrated production, creating a source of raw materials for processing and consumption. Currently, the province has developed and planted approximately 15,000 hectares of glutinous rice (accounting for 5% of the province's total rice cultivation area). In the spring crop of 2026, the entire province planted about 7,000 hectares of various types of glutinous rice. Of this, about 5,000 hectares are under production and product buyback agreements with businesses and cooperatives. Some businesses with large areas of glutinous rice under production and product buyback agreements include: Cuc Phuong Ninh Binh Co., Ltd. (250 hectares, 1,350 tons); Luu Suong Trading Co., Ltd. (500 hectares); An Thanh Phong Co., Ltd. (106 hectares)... The participation of cooperatives and businesses is making a significant contribution to increasing the value of glutinous rice. Through production linkage models, farmers receive guidance on cultivation techniques and have a stable market for their products. Thanks to these linkages, the value of glutinous rice is increasingly enhanced. Several specialty glutinous rice products from Thanh Hoa have been recognized as OCOP products, gradually asserting their position in the market.
Mr. Nguyen Huu Long, Deputy Director of Luu Suong Trading Co., Ltd., Ha Long commune, said: “Currently, the market is very interested in specialty glutinous rice products. We are collaborating with cooperatives in the communes of Nong Cong, Ha Long, Thieu Hoa, Hoang Hoa... to expand the area of glutinous rice and some other local glutinous rice varieties. Once the raw material area is stable, we will invest in processing, packaging and building a brand to expand the consumer market.”
Developing specialized glutinous rice cultivation areas not only brings economic benefits but also contributes to the preservation of valuable local rice varieties. When production is organized in a concentrated manner, linked to a supply chain from production to consumption, the province's glutinous rice products have the opportunity to reach further markets both domestically and internationally.
