Graduated from the Military Technical Academy in 2014, Nguyen Thi Tam was assigned to work at Military Hospital 4. The first days of taking on the task were a challenging time for a young engineer when first approaching a modern, diverse and highly specialized medical equipment system. “At first, I really struggled because the knowledge I learned at school was like that, but applying it in practice was not simple. There were many devices that I had never come into contact with, and I did not even understand the operating principles. I had to search for documents myself, learn from colleagues and persevere in research to master the technology,” Major Nguyen Thi Tam shared.
With a spirit of learning, perseverance and passion for the profession, she quickly mastered all kinds of machines and equipment, from simple to modern. For her, repairing and maintaining equipment is not only a professional task but also a responsibility to contribute to ensuring safety and improving the effectiveness of medical examination and treatment. "Each device that operates stably during surgery is another chance for the patient to live," she said.

One of her most memorable experiences was when the endoscope malfunctioned in the middle of a prostate surgery for an elderly patient with underlying cardiovascular disease. When the surgery was in its critical stages, the endoscope suddenly stopped working. Upon receiving an urgent notification from the surgical team, she immediately arrived, urgently checked and quickly fixed the problem in just a few minutes, helping the surgery continue smoothly. The surgery was successful, and she and the entire surgical team breathed a sigh of relief. That was one of many times she silently “kept the lifeblood” of the device, contributing to ensuring patient safety.
To do that, Major Nguyen Thi Tam has spent a lot of time and effort with the machines and equipment. Many nights, when the clock has just turned 10 pm, she is still working hard in the technical room, meticulously checking every detail of the machine to ensure safety for the surgeries the next day.
Not only does she ensure technical skills, she also actively researches, seeks out innovations, and improves to improve work efficiency. One of her typical projects is the initiative "Semi-automatic peripheral artery disease diagnosis support machine". The device allows measuring blood pressure in all four limbs, and through automatic modules, helps shorten the time, improve the accuracy in diagnosing peripheral artery disease, and at the same time saves costs many times over the previous manual method.
Evaluating this initiative, Major, Doctor Nguyen Nhat Tam, Deputy Head of the Department of Cardiology-Nephrology-Joints-Respiratory-Endocrinology, Military Hospital 4 said: “Comrade Tam’s semi-automatic peripheral artery disease diagnosis support device has high practical value. The device helps detect dangerous diseases early, especially factors related to coronary artery and stroke, contributing to improving the quality of treatment for patients”.
With a love for the profession and a passion for innovation, over the past time, Major Nguyen Thi Tam has created many innovations that have been effectively applied in practice such as: Control circuit for the X-ray machine's focal lamp; Temperature control and display unit for microbiological incubators; Mobile sample storage cabinets; Medicinal herb washing machine... Sharing about the research process, Ms. Tam said: "Turning an idea into a finished product is not a simple process. There were times when I thought I was on the right track, but when I finished, the results were not as expected, forcing me to adjust the design, even start over from scratch. There were also times when I felt discouraged, but thinking about the benefits of the patients, I was determined to pursue it to the end...".
Speaking about his colleague, Lieutenant Colonel Dang Ngoc Thanh, Head of the Equipment Department, said: “Major Nguyen Thi Tam is a good engineer, has solid skills, is always proactive in her work, actively learns and researches innovation. Her initiatives not only save costs but also improve the quality of technical assurance, effectively serving the examination and treatment work at the Hospital.”
With her continuous efforts, Major Nguyen Thi Tam has been awarded many certificates of merit, certificates of merit, the title of Emulation Fighter at the grassroots level and many other noble awards by her superiors. In particular, her initiatives and innovations have also won many important awards such as the Nguyen Viet Xuan Award at the Military Region level, the Creative Youth Award in the Army. Sharing about her own achievements, Major Nguyen Thi Tam modestly said that it was thanks to the attention and facilitation of the unit's leaders and commanders, of her comrades and teammates, and especially the companionship and support of her family and relatives. This has become a great spiritual motivation for her to continue to make more efforts and contributions.
