Dong Nai creates green growth for net zero target

In the context of climate change and the urgent need to reduce global emissions, green and sustainable development is no longer a choice, but an inevitable path. Dong Nai, with its position as a major industrial center, a key agricultural region and advantages in eco-tourism, has set a net zero target by 2050, in line with the Government's commitment at COP26 and COP28 (the 26th and 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change).

Many years ago, Dong Nai laid the foundation for green economy and circular economy. Throughout the recent Provincial Party Congresses as well as in the Dong Nai Provincial Planning for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050, sustainable development has always been identified as a pillar. This viewpoint shows both strategic vision and perseverance in goals, and is an inevitable requirement from the practice of industrial and agricultural development.

In early 2024, Dong Nai was the first locality in the country to issue a Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction Project for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050. This is not only a strategic step to realize the net zero target, but also demonstrates the province's political determination and initiative in considering emission reduction and green development as key tasks.

In the pillar sector, since many localities still attract foreign direct investment (FDI) at all costs, Dong Nai has had criteria to eliminate projects that pose a risk of environmental pollution and are labor-intensive. At present, the province has identified processing, manufacturing, and high-tech industries as breakthrough drivers. Industrial parks are required to transform towards green and ecological directions. This is the basis for reducing emissions in the sector that accounts for the largest proportion in the province's economic structure.

With the advantage of large area, the agricultural sector continues to shift towards high technology, organic, increasing the proportion of deep processing. Developing chains linked to raw material areas, applying technology and adapting to climate change will help Dong Nai maintain its position as the "capital" of: livestock, rubber, cashew...; at the same time affirming its role in the green agriculture of the whole country.

Another driving force is services and tourism. The province aims to become a green logistics center through the advantages of seaports, airports, dry ports and border gates. The forest area ranks first in the South, interspersed with rivers, lakes and mountains, helping Dong Nai converge all the conditions to develop a sustainable "smokeless industry", both creating livelihoods for people and reserving valuable resources for the future.

Bringing net emissions to zero is not only a goal, but also an opportunity for Dong Nai to restructure its economy in a green direction and improve growth quality. With existing foundations, new potential added after the province's merger, and strong political determination, Dong Nai has the basis to become a leading locality in the country on the journey to net zero by 2050.
