The proactive approach of Party committees and local authorities, along with the involvement of various sectors, organizations, and the people, is the "key" to improving the efficiency of waste collection and treatment in Dong Thanh commune, Thanh Ba district, contributing to environmental sanitation and the construction of new rural areas.
Leading us on a tour of the areas along the always green, clean, and beautiful concrete roads, we could fully appreciate the efforts and determination of the local Party committee and government in collecting and processing household waste in residential areas. Mr. Vi Bá Bin, a land management officer of the commune, shared: “Identifying waste collection and processing as one of the key tasks in socio-economic development, the commune proactively develops and implements a plan to improve the quality of environmental sanitation, with particular emphasis on collecting and processing waste right in residential areas and in each household. This is a regular activity, becoming a movement with positive influence spreading throughout the residential areas in the commune.”
Garbage collection vehicles will follow designated routes within residential areas to collect waste.
In recent years, recognizing waste collection and treatment as a key task, the People's Committee of Dong Thanh commune has developed a plan to implement the project "Household Waste Collection and Treatment in Dong Thanh Commune, 2021-2025, with a vision to 2030". Accordingly, the plan aims to further raise awareness among all levels, sectors, and the community regarding waste collection and treatment. It also seeks to invest appropriately in both human resources and funding to improve the management, collection, and treatment of household waste in the commune, creating an increasingly green, clean, and beautiful living environment.
In addition, the commune has identified the following categories for the collection and processing of household waste: household waste; waste from agencies, units, businesses, and schools; and waste from markets, etc. According to statistics, approximately 80% of household waste consists mainly of organic matter (vegetables, fruits, etc.); the remainder is paper, nylon, and plastic. To ensure effective waste collection and transportation, the Commune People's Committee requests that neighborhood leaders inform households, organizations, and businesses to consolidate their household waste into one sack and bring it to the end of the alley on the designated day for the waste collection and transportation team to collect and transport to the designated location.
Regarding waste such as weeds and grasses cleared along roadsides and trees removed from roads in residential areas during general cleaning of village lanes and alleys, residents are responsible for their own disposal. Absolutely no indiscriminate dumping of waste in unauthorized locations is permitted; any violations will be dealt with according to the Law on Environmental Protection. Regarding waste collection, the commune has contracted with Viet Tri Urban Environment and Services Joint Stock Company, setting collection times on Mondays and Fridays. Currently, the commune has 17 residential areas, which will be divided into 3 routes for collection.
In the assignment of tasks, emphasis is always placed on disseminating information about waste collection activities. Specifically, land and environmental officials preside over and guide the implementation of the plan; provide promotional materials to the commune and residential area radio stations for dissemination, and monitor and urge residential areas to carry out related tasks.
At the same time, increase the airtime dedicated to environmental issues, especially regularly publicizing the continued implementation of the waste collection and treatment project in the commune. The Commune Police Department, in coordination with the Land and Environment Department, will regularly inspect and handle individuals who resist the implementation of the plan and negatively impact the environment, such as: indiscriminate waste disposal, dumping waste in unauthorized locations, etc.
When it's time for collection, residents voluntarily bring their household waste to the designated collection points.
To enhance the effectiveness of household waste collection and treatment in residential areas, in the coming time, Party committees, governments, the Fatherland Front, and political and social organizations at all levels will continue to improve their roles and responsibilities in environmental protection, while mobilizing the participation of a wide range of people in environmental protection and minimizing waste generation.
Limiting the use of plastic products and plastic bags; improving transportation infrastructure and environmental landscapes, thereby changing the face of rural areas, creating bright spots in terms of landscape and green, clean, and beautiful environmental spaces, contributing to improving the quality of life for people and promoting socio-economic development in the locality.
