Dong Thap: Cultivating a passion for reading.

These days, activities such as reading books, drawing based on books, reading quiz competitions, and donating bookshelves to promote learning are taking place all over Dong Thap province, contributing to fostering a passion for reading among everyone, especially the younger generation.

In response to the 5th Vietnam Book and Reading Culture Day in 2026, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Dong Thap province is organizing a Children's Drawing Contest based on books with the theme "Books - Knowledge - Aspiration for National Development".

The competition attracted 181 participants, all elementary school students from schools across the province. Within 120 minutes, with their innocent yet imaginative drawings, the children created vibrant paintings expressing their love for books and libraries, and showcasing the beauty of their hometown, Dong Thap .

Each artwork reflects dreams and aspirations, contributing to the development of the homeland and the country. Many works carry profound messages, encouraging a reading culture and spreading the value of knowledge in life.

At the competition, the organizing committee awarded 90 prizes to contestants with outstanding works in terms of content, composition, and color, including: 3 first prizes, 15 second prizes, 27 third prizes, and 45 consolation prizes.

Nguyen Thai Anh Tho, a 5th-grade student from Phu Dien Primary School (Thanh My commune), one of the three outstanding students who won first prize in the competition, said: “I feel very proud to participate in the competition. Through each book, I learned many useful things. Through this, I hope that young people like us will turn to books more to gain more knowledge, and thereby fulfill our dreams in the future.”

The competition concluded in a joyful atmosphere, leaving many beautiful impressions and contributing to the widespread dissemination of reading culture and the spirit of learning in the community.

According to the organizers, the Children's Book-Based Painting Contest is not only a beneficial artistic playground but also contributes to fostering a passion for reading, forming a sense of self-learning through reading to accumulate knowledge and skills for building a prosperous and beautiful homeland.

In response to the 5th Vietnam Book and Reading Culture Day and to commemorate Vietnam's Disabled Persons Day (April 18th), the Dong Thap Library also held a Reading Contest for people with disabilities with the theme "Books - The Key to Success". The contest consisted of two rounds: a reading test answering 10 multiple-choice questions and a round sharing feelings about a favorite book.

Ms. Duong Thi Kim Dung, Deputy Director of the Dong Thap Relic-Museum-Library Management Board, said: "The competition not only creates a beneficial playground, attracting a large number of people with disabilities to participate, but also contributes to encouraging the spirit of self-learning, enhancing knowledge and spreading the passion for reading among people with disabilities."

Through this competition, the value of books continues to be affirmed as a companion, a key to unlocking the door to knowledge, and a contributor to the future success of people with disabilities.”

On April 19th, at Cao Lanh Book Street in Cao Lanh ward, the "Birthday with Books" event, along with quizzes, games, and book-related activities in English, organized by the People's Committee of the ward, attracted a large number of students and book lovers.

At the event, delegates and students reviewed the significance of Vietnam's Book and Reading Culture Day. Students had the opportunity to test their knowledge with questions and quizzes about books in English and participate in fun games.

The activities help improve English fluency, expand vocabulary, and build confidence in expressing oneself in an international language. In particular, students with birthdays in April receive a warm birthday celebration with loving wishes and meaningful gifts.

Over the past period, Cao Lanh ward has consistently maintained and implemented the criteria of a UNESCO Global Learning City, recognized on September 2, 2022. Accordingly, the ward has focused on maintaining and improving school library activities at Cao Lanh Book Street, contributing to promoting and honoring the value of books and creating opportunities for lifelong learning for local people.

Ms. Ho Hue Thu Hang, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Cao Lanh Ward and Head of the Cao Lanh Book Street Management Board, said: “This is a meaningful activity that combines knowledge education with life values ​​education: connecting book knowledge with lessons, thereby educating character, sense of responsibility, civic awareness, and beautiful ideals for students and young people, while also fostering a reading culture in the community. The activity helps children love books, reading, and learning more.”

Recently, the Dong Thap Provincial Association for the Promotion of Learning, in coordination with the Cao Lanh Ward Association for the Promotion of Learning, donated a library to the Learning Promotion Branch of Hamlet 8, Cao Lanh Ward.

Accordingly, the library donated to Hamlet 8 is equipped with over 200 books in various fields, such as: political ideology, culture, education, history, sports, medicine, health and life, children's books and comics… with many new titles, creating favorable conditions for people to participate in reading, gradually forming a reading habit in the community, especially the younger generation.

At the handover ceremony, many local residents, including children and teenagers, attended and participated in reading. Ms. Nguyen Thi Nhan, Vice President of the Dong Thap Provincial Association for the Promotion of Learning, said: "The handover of learning-promoting bookshelves to hamlets and villages aims to create a habit and gradually form a reading habit."

In addition, the Association also connected with the Dong Thap Library to donate more new books to ensure that people, especially young people, have access to new books. The Association also hopes that, alongside smartphones, young people will pay more attention to books and appreciate them through each page.”
