Rice exports in 2024 continued to set records, helping Vietnam maintain its position as one of the top three largest rice exporting countries in the world. According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development , in 2024, Vietnam exported 9.18 million tons of rice, earning $5.75 billion. Compared to 2023, although the export volume only increased by about 13%, the export value increased by as much as 23% thanks to a sharp increase in export rice prices.
According to Mr. Tran Thanh Hai, Deputy Director of the Import-Export Department of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, rice exports in 2024 reached a record high partly due to higher unit prices than in previous years. Vietnamese rice achieved an average export price of 627 USD/ton (previously below 600 USD/ton), an increase of about 9% compared to 2023.
Vietnamese rice has been exported to approximately 150 countries and territories worldwide. Businesses have also taken advantage of market opportunities arising from new-generation free trade agreements. Besides traditional markets such as China, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Malaysia...
After reaching record highs in 2024, Vietnam's rice exports in 2025 are likely to decline in both volume and price compared to 2024. This is due to weakening demand and increased competition among producing countries.
As of the first half of January 2025, Vietnam's export rice prices have fallen sharply to their lowest level in over two years due to weak demand. Export rice prices remained stable compared to the end of last week. According to the Vietnam Food Association (VFA), standard 5% broken rice is currently priced at US$419/ton; 25% broken rice at US$395/ton; and 100% broken rice at US$326/ton. However, compared to the beginning of last week, Vietnam's export rice prices are still trending downwards. At the beginning of last week, 5% broken rice was offered at US$422/ton, down from US$460/ton the week before.
Meanwhile, Indian rice prices are near their lowest level in 18 months and Thai prices have hit their lowest point since April 2023.
According to information from businesses, there is very little room for rice exports in 2025, given the already high base level of 2024 and the numerous unfavorable market factors, especially with India easing its rice export restrictions.
Over the past two years, India has had large rice inventories due to its tightening of global rice exports. Therefore, in the coming period, when the country eases rice export restrictions, it will put pressure on other exporting countries, including Vietnam. Furthermore, before the harvest season, Vietnamese rice prices are relatively high, so many importers are shifting to other countries to purchase earlier.
In 2025, rice prices may be lower than in 2023-2024, potentially even lower than in 2022, or only slightly higher. Since the end of the calendar year, many major rice-producing countries have entered their harvest season, including Vietnam, which is entering its winter-spring harvest, causing Vietnamese rice prices to fall rapidly.
In the Philippines, the government has been tightening control over rice prices in recent days, leading to increased market scrutiny by various ministries. Importers are also being cautious, and with the emergence of new sources, they are not in a hurry to sign contracts with Vietnam. As a result, the number of year-end rice orders signed for delivery at the beginning of this year is still limited.
Economic experts believe that adverse fluctuations in rice prices will not cause significant damage, especially when export businesses and relevant authorities proactively implement solutions to stabilize and reasonably stockpile rice and other raw materials from farmers.
Businesses have petitioned the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the State Bank of Vietnam to implement credit policies. These policies should focus on providing credit to support businesses in the process of purchasing rice from farmers. This would directly support farmers and indirectly through businesses. Businesses also believe that rice importers in traditional markets will soon resume signing contracts. This is because, along with the advantages of convenient transportation and trade, the fragrant and high-quality rice, and the competitive and reasonable prices, Vietnamese rice will maintain its market share.
