On weekends, Ms. Nguyen Thi Tuyet Nhung, a resident of Tan Hiep commune, often spends time taking her grandchildren to visit durian, melon, and vegetable gardens near her home. “In the summer, I often take my grandchildren to visit the gardens and fields near our house. I ask the garden owners to let the children participate in some simple tasks like harvesting vegetables and picking fruit so they understand the value of labor. Along the way, we chat about the history of the land and life around us. The children are very excited,” Ms. Nhung shared.
Having retired this year, Ms. Nhung plans to take her grandchildren to Lai Son Island on days with favorable weather. According to her, this is an opportunity for the grandchildren to learn more about the sea and islands of their homeland and to cultivate a love for the place where they were born and raised.
The family of Mr. Le Quoc Cuong, residing in Chau Thanh commune, also chose a short sightseeing trip instead of a long vacation. During their one-day trip from Minh Luong to Rach Gia, the family members had the opportunity to visit the Thanh Khiem ecological park, the Phu Quy urban area's land reclamation project, enjoy themselves in the Phu Cuong urban area, visit the museum, and explore the Phu Quoc ferry terminal. Mr. Cuong said that because his son was preparing for his high school graduation exams and university entrance exams, the family couldn't arrange a longer trip. However, the short trip still provided meaningful relaxation time, helping the children learn more about the culture, history, and life of their local area.
Meanwhile, Ms. Chau Ngoc Tu, residing in An Chau commune, chose to travel by motorbike with her family and friends. Their journey took them to Chau Doc ward, Vinh Te ward, and Ha Tien ward. “Because of limited funds, we chose to travel by motorbike. While participating in the Via Ba Chua Xu festival at Sam Mountain, I also took my children to enjoy the famous local dishes and experience the beaches of Ha Tien. It was a very fun and memorable trip,” Ms. Tu said.
For Ms. Tú, the moments spent strolling on the white sandy beach, admiring the clear blue water, and enjoying local specialties like Ha Tien noodle soup, Ha Tien sticky rice, or fresh seafood brought much joy to the whole family. After the trip, she and her group of friends continued to plan camping and experiencing catching snails and shellfish in nature on the weekend. “The cost of renting tents for a family of four is only 500,000 - 700,000 VND, but the children had so many interesting experiences. For young families like ours, this is a budget-friendly and suitable form of travel,” Ms. Tú shared.
Recognizing the growing trend of staycation tourism, in the summer of 2026, An Giang Tourism Development Joint Stock Company launched several promotional programs offering short-term, cost-effective travel packages. Ms. Do Thi Kim Yen, a representative of the company, stated that the program includes many attractive incentives such as free tickets for groups at Tuc Dup Hill Tourist Area, free ice cream for children, discounted cable car tickets at Cam Mountain Forest Park, reduced water park entrance fees for students, and various promotions on accommodation and transportation.
Local tourism not only benefits the people of the province but also serves as a bridge to promote the image of the homeland to friends from other localities. Ms. Tran Hong Nhien, residing in Co To commune, recently had the opportunity to take a friend from Dong Nai to visit the famous tourist attractions of her hometown. “We wore traditional Vietnamese ao dai dresses, visited historical sites, learned about the Via Ba Festival, and explored the natural landscapes of the Bay Nui region. My friend was very impressed with the unique culture here,” Ms. Nhien said.
In reality, the demand for weekend leisure and relaxation at destinations within the province and surrounding areas is increasing. Ecotourism, short-term resort tourism, and nature-based experiences are becoming popular choices for many young families. To capitalize on this potential, in addition to diversifying tourism products, localities and businesses need to strengthen the promotion and introduction of destinations, and develop experiential programs tailored to the needs of different tourist groups.
