Germany disappointed by being defeated by Ecuador. |
The defeat against Ecuador did not affect Germany's top spot in Group E, but the performance of Julian Nagelsmann's team has caused concern among many experts ahead of the Round of 32.
In his role as a commentator for MagentaTV, Jürgen Klopp sharply criticized Germany's approach to the match. The former Liverpool manager argued that the four-time world champions chose the wrong playing style against a physically strong and aggressive opponent.
“We chose the wrong approach against a very determined opponent. From the 12th minute onwards, Germany lacked the ability to break through. Too many things didn't work. That performance doesn't show that we can easily progress further in the tournament,” Klopp commented.
The German coach was particularly unhappy with the fighting spirit of "Die Mannschaft". He believes that the German team needs to combine technical quality with a stronger attitude.
“We have to combine quality with a special spirit. Ecuador played with more passion because they were fighting to stay in the tournament. Germany at least needs to match that intensity,” Klopp said.
Klopp also warned about Germany's dangerous turnovers. According to him, losing possession in sensitive areas is "a disaster." The former Liverpool manager emphasized that Ecuador had "swallowed" Germany in midfield challenges.
Mats Hummels, a 2014 World Cup champion, agrees with Klopp's view. The former German national team center-back believes this defeat is a necessary wake-up call ahead of the knockout round.
Nevertheless, Klopp and Hummels both believe that the German team still possesses enough potential to aim for big goals. The important thing is that coach Nagelsmann's team must quickly regain their intensity, determination, and fighting spirit before entering the round of 32.
