On the evening of March 24th, Google confirmed that it had inadvertently deleted some location log data (Timeline) on Google Maps belonging to users.
According to CNET , the search giant attributed the issue to a temporary technical problem, but did not elaborate on the specific cause. The problem was subsequently resolved, and new visits now appear normally in user logs.
"We experienced a brief technical issue that caused the deletion of location log data for some users. Nearly all users with encrypted location log backups will be able to recover their data. Unfortunately, however, those who did not enable backups will not be able to recover their lost data," a Google spokesperson said in a statement.
Google Maps' location log is a feature that helps Google users remember places they've been to and routes they've taken. This data is typically stored in a Google account as part of activity across websites, apps, and other services.
This isn't the first time Google has had trouble with location log data. Previously, the company has struggled to retrieve data from some users after switching from cloud storage to on-device storage as part of an effort to improve security.
Eric Abbruzzese, a director at market research firm ABI Research, said that because Maps is not a core Google product, and the affected user base represents only a small fraction of the total, the impact is likely not too significant.
However, he noted that if a similar incident occurred with another Google service, such as Gmail or YouTube, the consequences would be far more serious.
