A variety of pineapple-flavored coconut is currently being tested and developed in Ca Mau . With its ability to adapt well to coastal soil conditions, this coconut variety is expected to become a signature fruit product of the locality in the near future.
Pineapple-flavored coconut (also known as fragrant pineapple coconut) is a specialty coconut variety with a natural aroma similar to pineapple leaves, sweet and refreshing coconut water, and soft, creamy coconut flesh. Thanks to its distinctive flavor, this type of coconut is very popular with consumers.

Ca Mau province has a sub-equatorial climate, alluvial soil mixed with saline and acidic soil, and a dense network of rivers and canals. These conditions are favorable for developing specialty coconut varieties, among which the fragrant coconut tree shows good adaptability and stable growth.
Currently, the Ca Mau Provincial Agricultural Extension Center is implementing a model of growing fragrant coconuts at the Agricultural Technology Transfer and Research Station (Ca Mau Provincial Agricultural Extension Center) in Vinh My commune. With an area of approximately 2.7 hectares, the unit has planted over 300 fragrant coconut trees combined with a model of raising mudfish in the garden to improve land use efficiency.
After a period of care, many trees have begun to bear fruit and are being supplied to markets in the province and some provinces and cities nationwide. According to Ms. Nguyen Kim Thuy (Agricultural Technology Research and Transfer Station), the pineapple-flavored coconut is a variety with many advantages.

“The pineapple-flavored coconut tree begins to yield fruit after about 3.5 to 4 years of planting. The average yield is 70-100 fruits per tree per year, and with good care, it can reach over 120 fruits. Its distinctive feature is the coconut water's natural pineapple leaf aroma and refreshing sweetness, making it popular in the market,” Ms. Thuy said.
In terms of growth characteristics, the fragrant coconut has a moderately sized canopy, with an average height of 8-12m when mature. The fruit is smaller than the Siamese coconut, with a light green shell. Each fruit contains approximately 250-350ml of coconut water.
Besides its refreshing value, coconut flesh is soft, creamy, and fragrant, making it suitable for processing into various products.
The cultivation techniques for fragrant coconuts are similar to those for regular coconut varieties; the trees are less susceptible to pests and diseases and are quite easy to grow. However, due to the cross-pollination characteristics of coconut trees, it is necessary to avoid intercropping with other coconut varieties to prevent cross-pollination and loss of the distinctive aroma.

Despite its potential, the development of pineapple-flavored coconut in Ca Mau still faces some difficulties, such as small-scale production and the lack of concentrated specialized cultivation areas. Deep processing industries are limited, with most products still being consumed in the form of fresh coconut water.
In addition, the agricultural sector is also paying attention to ensuring a source of high-quality seedlings. “The Ca Mau Provincial Agricultural Extension Center is finalizing the application for recognition of the superior pineapple coconut variety at its facility. Once recognized, the Center will proactively provide high-quality seedlings to farmers in the province,” Ms. Nguyen Kim Thuy informed.

According to assessments by the local agricultural sector, in the future, if pineapple-flavored coconut production is linked to ecotourism and agricultural tourism models, and investment is made in preliminary processing and manufacturing, the value of pineapple-flavored coconut products could be significantly increased.
With a focus on developing growing areas, proactively securing seed sources, and gradually building a value chain, Ca Mau's pineapple-flavored coconut is expected to become a distinctive fruit product, contributing to diversifying livelihoods and increasing income for farmers in the southernmost region.
