Previously, the biggest win of the tournament was Japan's 5-0 victory over Zambia on July 22nd in Group C. Morocco is one of eight teams making their debut at the Women's World Cup, while Germany has never missed a tournament since its inaugural edition in 1991.
Prior to the tournament, Germany had poor results in friendly matches, winning only 2-1 against Vietnam and losing 2-4 to Zambia. However, the European representatives have a tradition of starting well in the Women's World Cup, with seven wins and one draw in the last eight tournaments. They also won all five matches against African teams, scoring 22 goals and keeping a clean sheet.
That history repeated itself on the Melbourne pitch this afternoon, Hanoi time, as Germany quickly found their rhythm, played coherently, and needed only 11 minutes to open the scoring. From a cross from the right wing, goalkeeper Khadija Errmichi came out of position, allowing Alexandra Popp to head the ball into an empty net. In the 39th minute, Popp doubled the lead with another header from a corner kick on the left. The 32-year-old German striker is the third player to score a brace at the 2023 World Cup, after his American counterpart Sophia Smith and Japanese counterpart Hinata Miyazawa.
The Moroccan players possessed technique and speed, but clearly showed a lack of experience in defense in their first appearance at the highest level of women 's football. Just as the second half began, the African team's net was shaken for the third time. Taking advantage of the chaos following a corner kick, Klara Buehl volleyed the ball into the net from inside the penalty area.
Germany then added two more goals thanks to an own goal from Ait El Haj and Zineb Redouani of Morocco. In the 90th minute, substitute Lea Schueller sealed the 6-0 victory for the European side with a close-range tap-in into an empty net.
Germany's opening victory puts them at the top of Group H with three points. The other match in the first round will be between Colombia and South Korea tomorrow, July 25th.
