The era of AI explosion has given rise to increasingly sophisticated forms of fraud – micro-technology devices integrated with AI.

On June 8th, a Turkish student was arrested for cheating on a university entrance exam, according to Reuters . The candidate used an AI-powered device that could automatically answer questions quickly.

The Isparta Police Department (Turkey) also released a video in which a police officer exposed the sophisticated method of using this device. The officer simply scans the question with a tiny camera disguised as a shirt button; the image is immediately transmitted to AI software via a router hidden inside the sole of a shoe. The AI software then provides the correct answer, reading it aloud through a miniature earpiece.

The cheating candidate has been taken into custody and is awaiting trial. Turkish police have also arrested a suspect who allegedly assisted the candidate.

"Worse than cheating"

In Japan, on May 15th, police forwarded the case file to prosecutors in preparation for the indictment of an 18-year-old student accused of using high-tech glasses to cheat on the entrance exam for Waseda University (Tokyo, Japan).

During the exam in February, candidates used smart glasses equipped with cameras to take pictures of the questions.

Before the exam, candidates went online to recruit "online tutors." The tutors' task was to immediately answer the questions that candidates sent them via social network X (formerly Twitter).

Each "online tutor" was promised a few thousand yen in payment and was unaware they were helping students cheat on exams. A social media user named X (who answered questions to help students cheat) became suspicious and contacted Waseda University to report the incident.

After the cheating was exposed, the candidate expressed remorse and admitted that their actions were "worse than cheating." The candidate claimed they cheated because they were afraid of failing the university entrance exam.

Strengthening supervision and disseminating exam regulations are measures adopted by many countries before major exams to prevent cheating. China, in particular, implemented several stringent measures in the 2024 exam.

According to the South China Morning Post , several provinces in China have announced the use of AI-integrated surveillance camera systems during the university entrance exams (June 7-10). These surveillance cameras will be placed within the exam sites and inside the examination rooms.

The AI was pre-trained to identify suspicious behaviors in the exam room, such as turning heads, bending down to pick up items, and communication between invigilators and students.

In addition, metal detectors are used at examination centers to prevent candidates from secretly bringing mobile phones into the examination room.

In recent years, Chinese police have also been using radio and mobile phone jamming devices around exam sites. Many schools have equipped themselves with facial recognition systems to prevent siblings or friends from taking the exam on behalf of candidates.

Just before the college entrance exam, China's Supreme People's Court released data on exam cheating since the amended Criminal Code came into effect in 2015.

Specifically, from November 2015 to April 2024, more than 11,000 people were penalized for organizing cheating, selling exam answers, or taking exams on behalf of others, including 5 individuals who faced criminal prosecution. Among these 5 cases, one teacher was sentenced to 4 years in prison for organizing a cheating ring during the 2020 university entrance exam.

The Supreme People's Court of China emphasized that the release of this data was intended to demonstrate an effort to combat "those who disrupt the examination order and undermine fairness."

In Vietnam, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has just directed relevant agencies to proactively prevent, detect, and handle acts of using high-tech devices to cheat in the upcoming high school graduation exam.

Representatives from the Ministry of Public Security also warned of the risk of candidates using AI cheating devices embedded in shoe soles to film exam questions.

In June 2023, just before the high school graduation exam, the Lam Dong Provincial Police, in coordination with the Ministry of Public Security, dismantled two networks involved in the buying and selling of miniature devices used for cheating on exams, such as earphones and cameras.
