After achieving overnight fame, many people strive to shed the label of "cover singer," proving their talent by releasing their own original music . However, many other cover singers fail. Controversy even erupts when some are accused of "profiting" from the intellectual property of other singers with their frequent cover performances.

Many predicted that 2023 would see an increase in "internet singers," as the development of streaming technology on social media platforms significantly impacted the Vietnamese music market. Alongside the rising young Gen Z artists, "phenomenal singers" who gained popularity through cover versions of famous songs are also attracting considerable attention from young audiences.

In recent years, the emergence of cover singers has become a viral trend. The explosion of streaming technology and live performances has led to a surge in popularity among cover artists. During this cover song craze, many young singers rose to fame as "internet sensations." Their commonality lies in the fact that they often gained popularity through a few clips of them covering songs by famous artists that were uploaded to social media. They then learned how to adapt popular and trending songs to create numerous cover videos that became huge hits, racking up tens of millions of views – an impressive "fortune" that even professional singers could only dream of.

After achieving overnight fame, many people strive to shed the label of "cover singer," proving their talent by releasing their own original music. Some, like Quân AP, Dương Edward, Juky San, and Hoa Vinh, have gained audience attention because they know how to chart their own path and become promising young talents in the music market. Quân AP and Juky San are among the few who have successfully overcome the label of "singers specializing in covers."

However, many other cover singers have failed. Controversy has even erupted as some have been accused of "profiting" from the intellectual property of other singers with their frequent cover performances. Many argue that some artists exploiting social media attention to make money from cover songs is not a sustainable way to develop their careers.

The Vietnamese music scene is not lacking in cases where artists cover other artists' hit songs so well that they inadvertently "steal" the original hit. Therefore, some artists use cover songs to gain more public attention. The phenomenon of singers "stealing hits" from their colleagues by singing covers while releasing their own original songs, and then being ignored by the public, does exist. There have been cases like HL and NE... who faced strong backlash for suspected copyright infringement.

Cover songs are not a new concept globally . In Vietnam, audiences are familiar with cover singers. Some professional singers even pay to have their songs covered to spread their work. However, constantly singing covers is clearly not a sustainable path for young people who want to achieve success. "Reaping the benefits" of others' hard work and investment, without contributing to the development of the music industry, or using gimmicks to gain fame, is unsustainable and easily leads to fading into obscurity after a while. Meanwhile, cover songs and song copyright remain controversial issues in the Vietnamese music market.
