Similar to social media, artificial intelligence (AI) could be one of the technologies that makes people feel worse.
It has been over two years since OpenAI launched ChatGPT. Since then, this chatbot has continuously evolved and now attracts over 400 million monthly users globally.

While ChatGPT may help people work more efficiently, it can also contribute to increased feelings of loneliness. This is the result of a collaborative study between OpenAI and MIT Media Lab, based on an analysis of millions of text conversations and hundreds of thousands of audio interactions between users and ChatGPT. Additionally, they surveyed 4,000 users about their chatbot usage behavior.
In an independent study, MIT Media Lab tracked the engagement levels of 1,000 users with ChatGPT over four weeks. Researchers collected data from both private and non-private conversations, via text and voice.
Research shows that feelings of loneliness and social isolation are influenced by many different factors, but ChatGPT may exacerbate these conditions in frequent users.
MIT Media Lab found that while most participants only chatted with the chatbot for a short time, a small group spent a significant amount of time interacting with it.
People who use chatbots more frequently tend to have higher levels of loneliness and dependence, and are less involved in social interactions.
Researchers also pointed out that ChatGPT's voice mode helps users feel less lonely. However, those who are already lonely tend to overuse the tool, making their situation worse.
Both studies were conducted on ChatGPT using the GPT-40 model. Last month, OpenAI introduced GPT-4.5, an improved version with greater intuitive capabilities and emotional intelligence.
