These days, Ea Súp district is in the peak of the 2024-2025 Winter-Spring rice harvest. Taking advantage of the favorable weather, people are busy harvesting the rice to ensure it's ready on time. Harvesting machines rumble from the upper fields to the lower ones. Along the roadside, the rice is bagged and piled up, waiting for traders to come and buy it. Many empty plots of land and stretches of concrete road with little traffic are being used as drying areas.
Having just harvested 1 hectare of rice, Mr. Pham Van Tien (village 7, Ea Bung commune) is hesitant to sell because he's waiting for a better price. He said that this winter-spring rice crop, his family planted 3 hectares with the ST24 variety. This year, the irrigation water supply is sufficient, the rice is less affected by serious pests and diseases, and the yield is quite high (9 quintals - 1 ton/sao). Currently, the price of fresh rice is being purchased by traders at 10,500 - 11,000 VND/kg, while last winter-spring the price was 12,000 VND/kg. Some of the collected rice is processed locally, while the rest is mainly transported to other provinces, with the price entirely dependent on the traders.

Ms. Phan Thi Thang (village 5, Cu M'lan commune) has just finished harvesting over 1 hectare of her family's rice crop. With stable yields, her family harvested about 10 tons of rice this winter-spring season, selling fresh rice at 6,600 VND/kg at the field. Due to unpredictable weather, this rice crop lasted about 4 months (normally 110-115 days), and the higher prices of fertilizers and pesticides increased cultivation costs compared to previous seasons, but farmers still made a profit.
According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Ea Súp district, in the 2024-2025 Winter-Spring crop season, the entire district planted 8,679 hectares of wet rice (reaching 110.7% of the plan). High-quality rice varieties suitable for the local soil and climate, such as ST24, ST25, Dai Thom 8, OM5451, OM18, OM4900, OM468, etc., accounted for 64% of the total rice area.
The weather during this season is complex; the early months are characterized by prolonged cold weather and strong winds, while the middle and end of the season see large temperature differences between day and night, along with unseasonal rains. Towards the end of the season, the weather is hot during the day and cold at night, with unpredictable changes. This is the main rice crop in the agricultural production structure of Ea Súp district, but it frequently faces drought.
To address this, the district has requested the Dak Lak Irrigation Works Management Company Limited – Ea Sup District Branch to closely coordinate with relevant agencies and the People's Committees of communes and towns to effectively manage irrigation works from reservoirs to canal systems; develop irrigation plans, drought prevention plans, and implement rational irrigation water regulation; assign irrigation schedules and irrigation areas; ensure sufficient irrigation water supply; and promptly handle and direct irrigation to areas at risk of drought.
In addition, local authorities and residents carried out surveys, dredging, repairs, upgrades, and new construction of irrigation works. As a result, the water supply from these irrigation works ensured sufficient and stable water for the cultivated area, preventing late-season droughts affecting rice crops. The area of paddy rice cultivation expanded in several communes such as Cư Kbang, Cư M'lan, Ia JLơi, Ia Lốp, and Ia Rvê.
In particular, in Ia Lop commune, the area of rice cultivation has increased to 300 hectares, benefiting from the Ia Mor reservoir ( Gia Lai province). In addition, the repair and upgrading of several rural and inter-field transportation infrastructure projects have facilitated agricultural production and transportation for the local people.

To date, approximately 90% of the 2024-2025 Winter-Spring rice crop in Ea Súp district has been harvested. The remaining area is unharvested due to late planting, meaning the rice has not yet fully ripened. According to local statistics, the average yield for this rice crop reached 7.65 tons/ha, with some areas exceeding 11 tons/ha, resulting in a total production of 65,049 tons and an economic benefit for farmers of 20-30 million VND/ha.
| For the 2024-2025 Winter-Spring crop season, Ea Súp district implemented four pilot models of new rice varieties. Specifically, the TBR391 rice variety, implemented in Ea Bung commune, achieved a yield of 7.5 tons/ha; the BDR79 rice variety, implemented in Ea Bung commune, achieved a yield of 10 tons/ha; the AYT77 rice variety, implemented in Ea Lê commune, achieved a yield of 7.7 tons/ha; and the TT800 rice variety, implemented in Ea Lê commune, achieved a yield of 8.3 tons/ha. |
