After a breakout season with Sunderland, playing a major role in helping the team gain promotion to the Premier League, Jobe Bellingham decided to follow in his brother Jude's footsteps by moving to Borussia Dortmund last summer.
The £26.9 million contract led the German media to have high expectations for the 19-year-old. However, his first few weeks in the Bundesliga did not go as smoothly as hoped.
To date, Jobe has appeared in all six of Dortmund's matches but has only started twice and has yet to play a full 90 minutes. In total, the young English midfielder has only played 154 minutes in the Bundesliga, without scoring or assisting. With Felix Nmecha, Marcel Sabitzer, and new signing Pascal Gross all being prioritized, Jobe is gradually being pushed down the list of midfield choices.

Jobe had a rocky start in Germany. |
Coach Niko Kovac explained the reason: “ Every player wants to play the full 90 minutes, but the team only has 11 starting players. When you sign a contract at Dortmund, it means you have to face fierce competition. Jobe is a great talent, but he comes from the English second division and needs more time to adapt to this environment.”
Beyond professional issues, Bellingham's younger brother also faced unwanted attention after his father, Mark, had a heated argument with sporting director Sebastien Kehl following the 3-3 draw with St. Pauli. Jobe was also reportedly unhappy with manager Kovac's decisions. He only started one more game before being relegated to the bench.
CEO Lars Ricken had to speak out to reassure the public: “It’s a shame that Jobe’s name keeps appearing before and after every match. He’s only 19 years old, and he has a long way to go. We have a five-year contract and we believe he will succeed at Dortmund.”
