Martinez has been suspended for 3 matches. |
In the 1-2 defeat to Leeds United on April 14th, Martinez was sent off for pulling striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin's hair. Referee Paul Tierney didn't notice, but after consulting VAR, the decision to issue a red card was made. According to regulations, pulling an opponent's hair with apparent force is considered " unsportsmanlike violence".
With the suspension upheld, the Argentinian center-back will miss three crucial matches, including the away game against Chelsea, and the clashes against Brentford and Liverpool. This is a major blow for the "Red Devils" at a time when their defensive line is already severely depleted.
Harry Maguire also received a one-match suspension after his red card against Bournemouth for reacting aggressively to the fourth official. Matthijs de Ligt is still unavailable, meaning all three of the most experienced central defenders will be absent from the match at Stamford Bridge on April 19th.
Conversely, young midfielder Kobbie Mainoo has returned to training and could feature against Chelsea, offering some hope in terms of squad availability. However, Patrick Dorgu is still recovering from a hamstring injury and is not yet ready to play.
With a shortage of players, young talent Ayden Heaven is likely to be given a chance to start. Pressure is mounting on MU, as another defeat could significantly narrow the gap with Chelsea in the race for a Champions League spot.
