Fabregas' tactical thinking is completely different from Amorim's. |
Fabregas’ analysis went viral on social media with his tactical views coinciding with the situation where MU dropped the victory. The former Spanish midfielder explained why he refrained from bringing defenders onto the field when the team was leading 1-0.
"When you withdraw a striker or midfielder and bring in a defender in the last 10-15 minutes, the message to the players is that the coach wants to defend. Automatically, the whole team sits deep, inviting the opponent to pile on the ball, increase the pressure. 80 to 90% of the time, that is counterproductive," head coach Como emphasized.
Many MU fans agree with this point of view. One person wrote: "Cesc is absolutely right. Amorim needs to be bolder if he wants to lead MU". "He is too conservative", "This mindset is not suitable for a MU coach", "Amorim is clearly wrong"... are other reactions from fans.
Amorim was questioned over his substitutions, making five changes in the second half, mostly defensive in nature, including Leny Yoro, Patrick Dorgu, Manuel Ugarte, Mason Mount and Lisandro Martinez. After taking the lead through Diogo Dalot, United lost the game when Amorim withdrew Matheus Cunha and Joshua Zirkzee.
West Ham regained the initiative and Soungoutou Magassa scored the equalizer in the 83rd minute, leaving the Old Trafford club with only one point. Kobbie Mainoo continued to sit on the bench as MU's midfield was judged to lack momentum at the end of the match.
Asked if he was being too cautious with his substitutions, Amorim countered: "No. We lost the second ball situations. It's not like bringing in an extra attacker will solve the problem. What more attacking options do we have?"
