Fernandinho officially retires after a glorious career. |
Fernandinho's career spanned three continents and left a lasting mark. He shone at Shakhtar Donetsk, winning six Ukrainian league titles and the 2009 UEFA Cup, before being signed by Manchester City.
At Etihad, the Brazilian midfielder became a mainstay in the club's successful era, winning five Premier League titles and six League Cups. He also ranks eighth on the list of players with the most appearances for Man City in the Premier League with 264 games, contributing 20 goals, 19 assists and 380 interceptions, a record fifth in the club's history.
After leaving Man City, Fernandinho joined Athletico Paranaense in 2022. While representing Brazil, Fernandinho won the 2019 Copa America and participated in three World Cups, making a total of 53 appearances.
Speaking after his farewell match for Athletico Paranaense, Fernandinho admitted his body could no longer keep up with the intensity: “Running for 30 minutes today was exhausting for me. In football, I have nothing left to pursue. I have enjoyed what I could. Now it’s time to spend time with my family.”
Fernandinho's decision to retire marks the end of a journey for a resilient, exemplary warrior and a quiet icon during Manchester City's golden era.
