The VAR referee is under investigation. |
Australian VAR referee Shaun Evans made a controversial gesture. As the cameras panned to Evans' position, he made a highly debated hand gesture. In the live footage broadcast before kick-off, Evans looked directly into the camera and made an "OK" sign with his thumb and index finger.
This is a common gesture used to express agreement or to imply that everything is alright. However, in recent years, some organizations and experts have warned that this symbol could be exploited by extremist groups for other meanings.
The incident quickly generated mixed reactions on social media. FIFA is said to have reviewed the video and even launched an investigation to clarify the true purpose of the action.
Previously, at the Paris 2024 Olympics, a person appearing behind the athletes was also caught making a similar gesture and subsequently had their press pass revoked. However, anti-discrimination organizations argue that caution is needed when evaluating such cases, as the majority of current uses of the "OK" sign are still positive and completely unrelated to hate messages.
From a professional standpoint, the VAR team fulfilled its duties in the match between Germany and Curacao. With their superior strength, the European representatives achieved their biggest victory so far in the 2026 World Cup (winning 7-1).
