FIFA is changing the schedule from two matches in two consecutive breaks to four matches in 16 days next year. |
The September international break is always frustrating for Premier League fans, as the season has only just begun with three rounds of matches. Liverpool currently leads the table with a perfect 9 points. Fans will have to wait another week to see the clubs return to action.
However, the September international break will no longer take place in its current format in 2026. Normally, the September and October breaks typically include two international matches, but from next year, FIFA will merge the two breaks into a 16-day period. This move will allow for four matches to be played during the two-week break, instead of the previous two.
The change means this will be the last time Premier League players will join their national teams at the start of September. Instead, the international break will run from September 21st to October 6th of the following year, allowing for two additional matches to be played early in the season.
However, the international breaks in November and March will remain at 9 days, with 2 matches during each break.
FIFA believes the changes will help alleviate the congestion in the fixture schedule, while minimizing disruptions caused by the four international breaks each year.
