FIFA wants to lift the ban on Russian football.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino expressed his support for easing and eventually lifting the ban on Russian football, arguing that the measure has not yielded the desired results.

Russian football has the opportunity to reintegrate with the world .

Speaking to Sky Sports , Infantino stressed that the current ban only creates more frustration and confrontation, rather than improving the situation. According to the FIFA head, at least at the youth levels, Russian football should be given the opportunity to return to the international stage.

"We have to consider reintegration. Absolutely," Infantino said. "The ban hasn't achieved anything. Allowing Russian boys and girls to play football elsewhere in Europe could have a positive impact. This is the right thing to do, at least at the youth level."

Russia was suspended from all international tournaments by FIFA and UEFA until further notice in February 2022, and was also excluded from the 2022 World Cup. Since then, Russian national teams have only played international friendlies.

In fact, UEFA had previously attempted to relax its policy in 2023 by allowing Russian U17 teams to return to competition, but was later forced to reverse the decision due to strong opposition from many member federations.

Infantino is not expressing this view for the first time. At the UEFA congress last April, he declared his desire to bring Russia back into the "European football picture," seeing it as a sign that all issues were resolved. Meanwhile, UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin affirmed: "When the conflict ends, Russia will be reintegrated."

Later this month, UEFA will hold a meeting of its Executive Board – the body with the authority to decide on Russia's return roadmap. Notably, FIFA recently announced plans to organize a U15 football festival, with participation from all 211 member federations, indicating that the door to reintegration at the youth level is gradually opening for Russian football.
