FIFA has agreed to temporarily lift the ban on Malaysia. |
On the evening of January 27, the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) fully informed FIFA of the CAS decision. In response, FIFA stated that it had "sent notifications to all member federations and continental federations, requesting a temporary suspension of the enforcement of the penalty at both domestic and international levels throughout the appeal process."
The seven players affected by this decision are Facundo Garces, Rodrigo Holgado, Imanol Machuca, Joao Figueiredo, Gabriel Palmero, Jon Irazabal, and Hector Hevel. These are all players who had previously been identified by FIFA as having eligibility issues and received 12-month suspensions.
Last September, the FIFA Disciplinary Committee issued a ban against this group of players, and also fined FAM 350,000 Swiss francs. Each player also had to pay an additional personal fine of 2,000 Swiss francs.
With the CAS decision to temporarily suspend the execution of the sentence, the entire penalty is now in a pending state, not taking effect until CAS issues a final ruling. This means that the seven players are allowed to return to playing while awaiting the official conclusion.
CAS has not yet set a date for announcing the final ruling. Meanwhile, this interim decision is seen as an important step to protect the players' right to compete and to help Malaysia avoid disrupting its squad during this sensitive period.
