According to The Athletic , FIFA will suspend Cristiano Ronaldo for three matches for the red card he received after elbowing an opponent in the match against the Republic of Ireland in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in Europe on November 13th. However, two of those suspensions are "suspended sentences".
"FIFA's disciplinary committee decided to ban Ronaldo from playing in one match, and also put him on probation for the following year, meaning the player will not have to miss any more matches unless he commits another similar offense," The Athletic reported.
Recently, Ronaldo served his suspension in the match between Portugal and Armenia. This means that CR7 will be able to participate in the first two matches of the reigning UEFA Nations League champions in the group stage of the 2026 World Cup.
Regarding CR7 personally, he revealed that the 2026 World Cup will be his last time participating in the World Cup. However, Ronaldo affirmed that his legacy does not depend on whether or not he wins the World Cup.
"If you ask me: Cristiano, is winning the World Cup a dream? No, it's not a dream," Ronaldo said in an interview with Piers Morgan. "To define what? To determine whether I belong to the group of the greatest players in history, based on just one tournament of 6 or 7 matches? Do you think that's fair?"
